SECTION B

QUESTION 2

a. A pyramid on a square base of side 12 cm and perpendicular height of 22 cm is

cut by a plane 7 cm from the base and parallel to it. Find the volume of the
frustum formed. [7]

b. b. Find also the total surface area of the frustum formed. [8]

QUESTION 3

A steel disc has a diameter of 12.0 cm and is of thickness 2.5 cm. A semi-circular groove
of diameter 2.0 cm has been machined centrally around the rim to form a pulley.

Determine ,
a. Using Pappus’ theorem, the volume of metal removed [8]
b. The volume of the pulley [3]
c. Mass of the pulley if the density of the steel is 7.8 g cm-3. [4]

QUESTION 4

a. a. Differentiate from first principles f(x) = ⁄ . [5]

b. b. A rectangular sheet of metal which measures 24 cm by 16 cm has square ends

removed from each of the four corners so that an open box may be formed. Find
the maximum possible volume for the box. [10]

QUESTION 5

a. Plot the graph of y = -2x2 + 4x + 7 for values of x from x =2 to x = 4. Determine

the coordinates and nature of the turning point. [5]

b. Use the graph to solve:

i. -2x2 + 4x + 7 = 0 [1]

ii. -2x2 + 4x + 4 = 0 [3]

iii. -2x2 + 4x + 12 = 0 [3]

iv. -2x2 + x + 6 = 0 [3]

QUESTION 6

a. Plot a graph of y = 3x2 + 6 between the values of x from x =1 to x =4. [4]

b. Estimate, correct to 2 decimal places the area enclosed by the curve in (a) above ,
the ordinates x =1and x = 4, and the x-axis by
(i) the trapezoidal rule, [2]
(ii) the mid- ordinate rule, and [2]
(iii) Simpson’s rule. [4]

c. Compare each method with a true value of area from integration. [3]

QUESTION 7

a. Two circles have diameters which differ by 4 cm. If the sum of their areas is
about 146 cm2, what are their radii? [6]

b. The figure below shows a rectangular metal plate. A circle has been cut out of the
centre and quadrants of circles of radius r cm from the corners as shown. The
remaining area forms a template of area 200 cm 3. Calculate the diameter of the
central circle if its radius R cm is 2r cm.
