SECTION A

QUESTION 1

1.1 (i) Solve for x, 23x + 2 = 64 (2 marks)

(ii) If log 2 = 0.3010 and log 3 = 0.4771, evaluate √ (3 marks)

(ii) Determine the area of a sector of a circle of diameter 20 cm which has an angle

1.5 Differentiate f(x) = x2 – 1 from first principles. (5 marks)

1.6 Find the area f a triangle whose sides are 9 cm, 7 cm and 6 cm. (5 marks)

SECTION B

QUESTION 2

a. Two sides of an acute angled triangular plot of ground are 48 m and 30 m


respectively. If the area of the plot is 590 m 2. Calculate the length of the 3rd side
and the angle between 48 m and 30 m. (7 marks)

b. Two ships P and Q set sail at the same time from the same port. P sails at a steady
speed of 30 km/hr N 41o W and Q at 24 km/hr N 32o E. Find their distance after 3
hours. (8 marks)

QUESTION 3

A steel disc has a diameter of 12 cm and is of thickness 2.5 cm. a semi-circular groove of
diameter 2 cm has been machined centrally around the rim to form a pulley. Find the
volume of the pulley, volume of metal removed and mass of the pulley in kilograms if
the density of steel is 7.8 g/cm3. (15 marks)

QUESTION 4

a. Plot the graph of y = - 2x2 + 4x + 7 for values of x from x = -2 to x =4. (4 marks)

b. By making use of the graph and drawing suitable straight lines, find the
solutions of the following equations:

i. –2x2 + 4x + 7 = 0 (2 marks) ii. -2x2 + 4x + 4 = 0 (3 marks)

iii. -2x2 + 4x + 12 = 0 (3 marks) iv. –2x2 + x + 6 = 0 (3 marks)


QUESTION 5

a. The perimeter of a triangle is 42 cm, one side is of length 14 cm and the area is
21√ cm2. Find the length of the other sides and show that the cosine of the
largest angle is ¼. (7 marks)

b. In a triangle ABC, the lengths of sides AB, BC and AC are 7 cm, 2 cm and b cm
respectively. Angle C is 30o. by using cosine formula show that
b2 – (2√ ) b – 45 = 0.

Hence find the exact value of b leaving your answer in the form a√ where a and

c are real numbers. Show that sin B = (8 marks)

QUESTION 6

a. Find the turning points on the curve y = 4x 3 – 3x2 – 18x + 6 and distinguish between
them. (8 marks)

b. An open rectangular tank with a square base of side x metres and height h metres is
designed in such a way that its capacity is at least 500 cm 3. Show that the surface area of

the tank is; A = . Hence determine the minimum dimensions of the tank in line

with design specifications (7 marks)

QUESTION 7

i. Calculate the length of an arc and the area of a sector of a circle of radius 12
cm which contains an angle of 72o in terms of π. (7 marks)

ii. A cooling tower is 20 m high. The inside diameters of the tower at different
heights is given in the table below

Estimate the capacity of the tower in m 3 correct to 4 significant figures using


Simpson’s rule. (8 marks)
