Assessment: An assessment is a product or performance.
Assessment is not based on one task, nor is it
expressed by mark or grade, but rather in a report form with scales or levels as well as description and comment from the teacher. The report is written based on samples of the student’s work, the student’s self-assessment sheets, teacher’s observation notes on the achievement of student’s linguistic ability, attitude, participation, cooperation and general cognitive development. Assessment requires the gathering of evidence of student performance over a period of time to measure learning and understanding in order to improve teaching and learning. It is a process by which information is obtained relative to some known objective or goal. Evidence of learning could take the form of dialogue, journals, written work, portfolios, and tests along with many other learning tasks. Assessments are designed to measure the performance of an individual or product and use that assessment to provide documentation of growth and development, give feedback, and create a plan of action for the future. Assessments are not designed to be judgmental, and are tailored to the individual person or product’s past performance. Classroom assessment helps individual teachers obtain useful feedback on what, how much, and how well their students are learning. Teachers can then use this information to refocus their teaching to help students make their learning more efficient and more effective.
