WINTER

WONDERLAND
The first ever painting resource from Alexander Art
This is the very first painting resource created by Alexander Art for Bill’s “Magic of Oil
Painting” television program.

The original packet included the photo, a typewritten sheet (reproduced below) and a
template of the painting. (We’ve included the template as a separate download.)

The painting was originally sized for a 16” X 20” canvas, but we’re providing a
template sized for an 18” X 24” canvas as well.

You can use the grid photo to resize your painting for a 12” X 16” canvas.

We hope you enjoy this little journey back into time to see where it all began.

Happy Painting!

EQUIPMENT: ALEXANDER’S MAGIC OIL COLORS:
• 16” X 20” Canvas • Alexander’s Magic White™
• Alexander’s 2 1/2” brush • Titanium White
• Alexander’s 1” Brush • Permanent Red
• #3 Fan brush • Alizarin Crimson
• Alexander’s Palette Knife
 • Prussian Blue
• Van Dyke Brown

Preparing the Canvas:

Prepare the canvas by covering it completely with a thin, even coat of Magic White™.

Sky: Load 1” brush with Prussian Blue + Alizarin Crimson. Use swirly strokes, press harder
where you want it darker. Leave some of the Magic White™ showing, when you have finished
painting the sky. Hypnotize with 2 1/2” brush, moving from light to dark.
Mountains: The mountains are a mixture of Titanium White, Prussian Blue, Alizarin Crimson
and Van Dyke Brown. Mix to a marbled appearance. Apply to canvas with knife. Soften
bottom of mountain with brush. Hi-lite with white + blue on cool side. White + red (pinkish) on
warm side.
Next Mountain Range: Same colors but get darker. Soften at bottom as before. Add hi-lites
same as above.
Water: Same colors as mountains. Brush down and then across.

Banks: White + touch of Red.

Trees: Sap Green + Van Dyke Brown + Prussian Blue + White. Use fan brush, add small
trees in background. Use flat of fan brush closer to ground. Add more Sap Green as you
come forward.
Large Tree: Same color as above + Van Dyke Brown. Use knife — pull side ways. Add sun
colors with fan brush on right pulling back other direction. Thin paint and use liner brush for
branches. Dark first; then hi-lite.
Foreground: Knife in same dark as large tree. Hi-lite with white + Prussian Blue — Titanium
White + Permanent Red in sunny areas. Add water lines with thin paint (white thinned with
Magic White™). Soften with 2 1/2” brush
