Ship Design I

Optimization applied to conceptual ship design June 04h, 2021

Group work

Objective: Optimize at conceptual design level the ship you are going to work in your
integration project.

Report: In the report, you must explain the optimization procedures that you are going to
apply to select main characteristics of your design project. Start by describing the objective
function, design variables, constraints, and parameters considered in the process. Describe the
organization of the subroutines or modules, which is recommended with a flow chart. Describe
the procedure to calculate all the hull characteristics to define the ship at conceptual level,
including references; also the method to evaluate the objective function and the constraints.
Since this design is to conceptual stage, use adequate simplistic procedures.

Discussion of results: discuss the convergence of the optimization process starting with
different initial values of the design variables. Also discuss the path of the constraints as the
procedures advances.

Conceptual design: with the results of the optimization procedures, prepare plans of your
design. For example, profile, plan and midship section, with main characteristics and to satisfy
calculated form coefficients. Include also a simple general distribution plan, showing the
satisfaction of the requirements for the design.

Report: it must be prepared in English, 8-page long maximum, and with format for the
TAC2016 conference:

te.docx
The evaluation will consider: aesthetics: 20%, technical content 60%, and, poster (printed
in A3 format): 20%.

Progress control: Monday June 7th specify type of ship with design requirements,
objective function, restrictions, and, describe optimization method to be applied.
Friday June 11th, document to be loaded in Teams and explanation in class.
Final report: Friday June 18th
Please report number of hours employed for this work.
