Texas’s house and senate passed a bill, SB 827, which will cap the price of insulin in

Texas. It is currently heading to Governor Abbot’s desk. If signed, the bill would limit insulin

copays to $25 for each prescription a month on state-regulated programs. There are about 2.8

diabetics in Texas. Over the past few decades, the price of insulin has tripled. One of the main

advocates for the bill, Representative James Talarico, knows from personal experience how

important insulin is. In 2018, Rep. Talarico decided one way he would campaign is by walking

through his entire district, which is 25 miles. On this walk, he began to feel ill. When he went

home, he tried to recover. However, he ended up sleeping for 36 hours straight. Doctors figured

out he was in diabetic ketoacidosis, which happens when a diabetics bloodsugar becomes too

high due to their pancreas not producing enough or no insulin. When the doctors figured out he

was in a DKA coma, they rushed him to the emergency room where they found out his blood

sugar was over 900, which is ten times higher than normal levels. Talarico has been depending
on insulin to stay alive since that day and hopes that this bill will help diabetics across his state;

however, he recognizes more needs to be done.
