AIM: Measurement of B.P. with Rope Brake dynamometer:-

The arrangement of the rope brake dynamometer is shown in fig.

it can also be applied to the fly wheel of a moderate sized engine. A rope is
wound around the brake wheel as shown in fig. one end of the rope is
connected to the spring balance suspended from overhead and carries the
load W.
In this arrangement the whole power developed by the engine is
absorbed by the friction produced at the rim of the wheel is generally water
cooled as the power absorbed by the friction is converted in to heat and the
temperature of the brake wheel increases.
Let,
W=weight in N on the rope.
S= spring pull in N.
D= outer diameter of the brake wheel.
d = diameter of the rope.
N= R.P.M. of the engine.
Net load or frictional force acting on the wheel = (W-s)
The effective radius at which the net load is R = (D + d)/2
The Frictional torque acting on the wheel is given by
T = friction force x radius
= (W-S) R
= (W-S) {D +d}/2 N.m
Power developed (or absorbed)
= Frictional torque x angular rotation in
Radius per minute
= {(W –S)(D +d)/2}(2N)/60. N.m/sec
The Brake power is given by
B.P. = (Work done in Nm/sec)/1000 kW
= (w-s)(D+d)/2 x 2N/1000. KW
