The Tragedy of Julius Caesar

I. Trial Preparation
Witnesses: Prepare your Sworn Statement.
To embody a character well enough to tell the “whole truth and nothing but,” you should
know everything about your character.
Re-read the text and look at each line your character speaks or that another character says
about you.
Create a 1 page Sworn Statement that includes an character profile based on evidence
from the play.
The defense or prosecution may use this character information against you in cross-
examination.
In your Sworn Statement, you should answer the following questions:
 Who are you?
 How are you related to the accused party (Brutus)? (How do you feel towards
Brutus)
 How are you related to Gaius Julius Caesar? (How to you feel towards Caesar)
 What is your role in the play?
 What are your characteristics? How would you describe your personality?
Lawyers: Prepare you Opening Statement and choose who you want to call on and examine
directly.
 These comments will be the first things you say to the Court. It is a preview of your
case and gives the jury an overview of what is to follow. Use simple language and not
too much
 detail.
 Directly state what your case will prove.
 State the name of the name of the case, your name, the name of your client, and the
name of the opponent.
 Provide a brief preview of the facts.
II. Close Reading
 Act V Scene I page 67 & 68 & 69
a. What does Antony say about the attack that the Brutus and Cassius are launching?
Do you think he is correct based on Act 4?
b. What does Octavius reveal about his motivations?
c. On page 69, how does Cassius engage in confirmation bias?
 Act V Scene III (pages 72 – 74).
a. Summarize what happens in 2 sentences.
b. On page 74, what do you think tis the most significant quote that Brutus says?
What does it reveal about his conscience?
