The Romanian woman's longing

God willing
Listen to my longing!
If I had a baby,
Dear mother angel!

By day, by night,
I would whisper to her with gentle whispers.
How much night, how much day,
I would also guard him at my breast!

I would guard him, I would caress him,

I would give him thousands of kisses,
And I would say softly:
Dwarf, dwarf, baby!

If only heaven were right,

Fulfill my wish!
If he would give me a little boy,
Dear strong mother!

He wouldn't be a happier baby

And the most beloved in the world!
Another child wouldn't be like him,
Tiny and beautiful!

His cheeks are like foam

It would have no equal in the world!
It wouldn't be anyone's eyes
Sweet as his eyes!

And I, proud nun,

His eyes, his mouth
I would keep kissing him,
I would kiss and sing to her.

And I would enchant her

To become a great brave man,
A brave man who would shine,
As it was not, it would not be

And I would put him to bed

On my breast, sweet rocking,
And I would say softly:
Dwarf, dwarf, baby!
