CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Debate is a process of oral communication expressed in language to defend an opinion.
Each party who argues will state the argument and provide arguments in a certain way so that the
opposing party is arguing or the other party says that it is confident and sided with him (Asidi
Dipodjojo, 1982)

In connection with the situation, consciously as well as did not realize the debate
participants had engaged in language activities by acting as speaker and speech partner.
Speakers are people who speak, that is, people who express certain pragmatic functions
in the event of communication. Meanwhile, the said partners are people who is the target
as well as fellow speaker in narrative. The roles of speakers and speech partners are
carried out alternately in a speech act. The actor who originally played the role of a
speaker at the next stage of speech can be a speech partner as well on the contrary
(Rustono, 1999: 27).

Debate is the discussion and exchange of opinions on a matter by giving reasons to

defend each other's opinions. Everyone who is involved in a debate has different duties and roles
(Kkbi,2021)

2.1 Definitions
In the Debate: Critical Thinking, Broad Insight, Persuasive, Argumentative (2018)
by Fegy Lestari, debate is an activity to discuss something and defend opinions. By
providing reasons or evidence, convincing others to be true. And the ability to lead other
people to understand their thoughts.

A debate that aims to find out the truth. The arguments presented are intended to be checked
or re-examined. This type of debate contains many questions in order to defend one's
position. This type of debate is common in trials, between prosecutors and lawyers.
