Duration: 1 & ½ hours Max Marks: 30

Notes: (i) All questions are compulsory.

(ii) Draw neat sketches to support your answers wherever necessary.
(iii) Assume suitable value of data if not given.

Q. 1 (a) What force is necessary to lift a thin platinum wire ring of 3.0 cm diameter from a water
surface. Assume the surface tension of water = 0.0728 N/ m and neglect the weight of wire.
Assume dia. of wire << dia. of ring. (2.5)
(b) A clean tube of internal diameter 3 mm is immersed in a liquid with a coefficient of
surface tension = 0.48 N/m. The angle of contact of the liquid with the glass can be assumed
to be 130o. The density of the liquid is 13,600 kg/ m3. What would be the level of the liquid in
the tube relative to the free surface of the liquid outside the tube. (2.5)
(c) A sleeve 10 cm long encases a vertical metal rod 3.0 cm in diameter with a radial
clearance of 0.02 mm. If when immersed in an oil of viscosity 6.0 poise, the effective weight
of the sleeve is 7.5 N, will the sleeve slide down the rod and if so at what velocity. (2.5)
(d) A thin plate is placed between two flat surfaces ‘h’ cm apart such that the viscosity of
liquids on the top and bottom of the plate are µ1 and µ2 respectively. Determine the position of
the thin plate that the viscous resistance to the uniform motion of the thin plate is minimum
(Assume ‘h’ to be very small). (2.5)
Q. 2 (a) A vertical isosceles triangular gate with its vertex up has a base width of 2m and a height
of 1.5 m. If the vertex of the gate is 1 m below the free water surface, find the total pressure
force and the position of centre of pressure. (2.5)
(b) A flow is described by the stream function ψ =2√3*x*y. Locate the point at which the
velocity vector has a magnitude of 4 units and makes an angle of 150o with the x-axis. (2.5)
(c) A block of wood of rectangular cross section of sides ‘a’ and ‘b’, and of length ‘L’ has a
relative density of ‘S’. If the block is to float in water with its longest axis horizontal and
length ‘a’ vertical. Find the ratio (b/a) to have a stable equilibrium. (2.5)
(d) Prove and explain Pascal’s law for fluids at rest. (2.5)
Q. 3 (a) A 1: 50 spillway model has a discharge of 1.25 m / s. What is the corresponding prototype
3

discharge? If a flood phenomenon takes 12 hr to occur in the prototype, how long should it
take in the model? (2.5)
(b) A pipe of diameter 1.5 m is required to transport an oil of relative density 0.9 and
kinematic viscosity = 3 x 10-2 stokes at a rate of 3.0 m3/ s. If a 15 cm diameter pipe with water
at 20o C (ʋ = 0.01 stokes) is used to model the above flow, find the velocity and discharge in
the model. (2.5)
(c) A lined rectangular channel with Manning’s n = 0.015 is 5 m wide and has a flow depth of
2 m with bed slope of 1 in 1600. Retaining the rectangular shape of the channel and the same
total area of lining, to what maximum extent can the discharge be increased without changing
the slope. (2.5)
(d) What size of a rectangular drainage pipe is needed to carry a discharge when flowing half
full? The pipe is laid at a slope of 0.0004 and Manning’s n for the pipe material can be taken
as 0.018. (2.5)
