Objectives:

to develop pupils’ thinking;

to discuss the problem;
to enrich pupils’ outlook;
to form pupils’ feeling of respect, love, responsibility for our planet.

Equipment:

multimedia complex, PPT presentation, video and audio of “Earth Song” by

Michael Jackson, audio file “Nature’s Sounds”, brochures “The Future of
the Earth Is in Our Hands”, pictures, quotations on the topic.

P1.The earth is the planet given to us by God to live on. It is the only planet
in our solar system that humanity can comfortably inhabit.

P2.It is full of beautiful things like flowers, birds, waterfalls, trees.

P1.The earth is a paradise for the creatures

that live on it. Every species on earth has its
place in the circle of life.

P2.Human beings need food, clothing, and

shelter to survive. All of these are provided in ample supply on God's green
earth.

P1.The earth we live on is really wonderful: blue oceans, seas and rivers,
mountains, hills, fields and valleys. We live surrounded by this beauty.

P2.Our Earth is so beautiful. Nature gives people its riches to live and
enjoy.

The Earth is ours to enjoy
For every little girl and boy.
But we must always be aware.
That all its beauty we must share
With all the children yet to come,
Who want to laugh and play and run
Around the trees and in the fields.
So we must keep our planet free
From messy trash and debris
With air that's clean and fresh and clear
For all to breathe from year to year.
We must never ever abuse
Our sweet Earth that's ours to use.
P1.We cannot live without fresh air, clean water, sunshine and a lot of
things, which we take from the nature.

P2.Mankind long believed that whatever we did the Earth would remain the
same. Now we know that it is untrue and many people believe the way we
live our lives today is having an extremely bad effect on the environment.
So, it is high time we gave a warning to the world.

P1.Look at what we’ve done! We’ve polluted many rivers, seas, lakes and
oceans, forests and woods. We’ve polluted the air with our cars and
factories. This has killed animals and plants, and they have disappeared
forever.

P2.Today we are going to speak about the most valuable thing we have – our
Earth, the planet we live on. The topic of our meeting is “The Earth is our
home».

The Future
What does the future hold for us?
Smog filled skies and poison cars,
And broken land with useless dust
And nature’s beauty behind bars.

Can I ever show my children,

(If they ever come my way)
The beauty of a sunset
At the ending of the day?

Can I walk into a forest,

And surround myself with trees,
Yet know that it will remain,
For me to visit as I please.

I know that I can today

Do all the things I’ve said,
But when today is yesterday,
Will all these things be dead?
This problem is enormous
As we gradually take heed,
So we must fix it quickly,
Using words and thoughts and deeds."

P1.As you can see our planet does face very serious problems. The situation
is so serious that some scientists say either we stop killing our planet or
we'll kill ourselves. Pollution causes other ecological problems, doesn't it?
But is it possible to stop the pollution of air, water, and land at all?

P2.That’s why people who take care of our planet have established the 22nd
of April as a special day around the world - the Earth Day.

P1.It’s the day for people to learn what they can do to protect the planet.
Hopefully, it is not too late.

P2.Earth Day is a time to become more aware of the world around us, the
state of our planet, and renew promises to do our part to keep it clean and
safe for future generations.

I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.

And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.

That's why we
Celebrate this day.
That's why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.

P1.Many people think they can’t do anything to help, they aren’t strong
enough. Everyone can help if they just try.

P2.But just sitting around and doing nothing is a crime. Please stop
expecting from others to make things right....we are the world and as such
we must react.

P1.Your words have Powers. Someone reading it changes somewhere .You

and I, we both witness the wrath of Nature.

P2.We both have the duty to volunteer and save what we can. You may be a
Poet, a Writer, a Blogger, a Photographer, an Artist or even just a normal
Reader. Whoever you are just spread the message in your own way.

P1.Mother Theresa said “If every person swept their own door-step, the
whole world would be clean.” So everybody can do something for our planet.
Clean up your home, around your home, around your school. You’ll see it is
great!

P2.Here are some facts that may surprise you.

P1.Many people in the world try to do as much as possible to save our planet.
One of such persons was world famous American pop-singer Michael
Jackson. Listen to “Earth Song” devoted to the global environmental
problems written by him.

P2.Here are some facts about pollution

P3. I want to tell you about water

pollution. Rivers, lakes, seas, oceans
cover more than 70% of our planet.
Scientists say “man will die if oceans die”.
Over 5 million tons of oil products pollute the ocean
each year. First the oil products go into atmosphere. From the atmosphere
they go into oceans. In addition big rivers carry into the ocean a lot of
waste from industry and agriculture. Pollution means death to oceans. It
kills fish, plants, and birds.

P4. The industry affects the nature greatly. Because of the water pollution,
more than 50% of the world’s purest water has been ruined. Some
organisms are disappearing; trees are dying from the dust and gas blow-
outs of the factories.

P5. Nobody and nothing on the Earth could live without air. People pollute
the air all over the world. A great number of trees growing on the planet
produce oxygen and clean the air. But vast forests are cut and burn in fire.
Their disappearance upset the oxygen balance.

P6.Besides, the ozone layer in the atmosphere protects the Earth from the
dangerous ultraviolet rays of the sun. It’s like a kind of a roof. But now,
because of the air pollution, the ozone layer is destroyed. The dangerous
rays get through the atmosphere, causing different diseases.

P7. In addition awful harm is caused to our home by nuclear tests of atom
bombs, accidents on the atomic power stations, for example, Chernobyl
tragedy in 1986. About 18% of the territory of Byelorussia was polluted
with radioactive substances.

P8. Every year each family create one ton of rubbish. A great number of
dumps are all over the country. Just only some facts: it takes more than 2
years to decompose paper. Cans and tins destroy more than 90 years.
Plastic packets decompose more than 200years, glass- more than 1000
years.

P9.People in cities suffer greatly from the pollution. But as for animals, the
situation is really dramatic. Almost all animals, insects, and birds living on
our planet need help. They could disappear forever. During 300 years 280
species were destroyed on our planet.

You could not learn and be cool.
Could you imagine not seeing grass,
We could not see the lands mass.
Could you imagine life without mammals,
You wouldn’t see the distinct animals.

Life like this is caused by global warming,

No more searching, seeking, and investigating,
For that one special place,
We would lose the human race.

P10. 1) 8 big cats are killed to make one fur coat;

2) only several hundred of rhinos are left in Asia;
3) about 3 millions kangaroos are hunted every year;
4) only 30 Californian condors were left in the world;
5) millions buffalos were destroyed by now;
6) over 40000 monkeys are caught every year;
7) about 300 dolphins and 30 sea turtles are poisoned by water
pollution every day.

P11.Every ten minutes, one kind of animal, plant or insect disappears. If

nothing is done about it, over one million species will disappear in twenty
years from now.

P12.The tropical rain forests, which are the home of half the Earth’s living
things, are being destroyed. If nothing is done about it, they will disappear
in twenty years.

P1.Well, the contradiction between man and nature are really very dramatic.
But is there anybody who does something to make the life of animals
better?

P2.In 1949 scientists examined the living conditions of animals, birds, and
insects. They made the list of rare and disappearing living things and named
in Red Data Book.

P1.Environmental protection is a universal concern. That’s why a serious

measure should be taken to create a system of ecological security. Do you
know any international organizations trying to solve this problem?

P2.Fortunately, there are people who are trying to do something about it.
Not only are the international organizations trying to stop the destroying
of the nature. Lots of people organize ecological groups and do their best
to help the nature in their native places.

P1.Today we have some guests from Great Britain. They are

representatives of different ecological groups. Nice to meet you, dear
friends. Introduce yourself, please.

a. Hello, I’m Jane Smith. I’m from “Liverpool Ecology Group”.

b. My name is Kate Servins. I live in Scotland. I’m a member of the

group “Friends of the Earth.”

c. Glad to meet you. I’m Helen Brown “London Wildlife Trust”.

P2- Do you celebrate the Earth Day? What activities do you suggest your
members?

a.- We celebrate the Earth Day every year. Twice a month we meet and
discuss how to help the nature. We build bird-tables and bird-houses, plant
and water trees and flowers. Besides we pick up litter in the forest.

b.-We have special environmental education in our country. We teach pupils

how to reduce energy and water. We collect old newspapers, cans and tins
to recycle. Besides we reuse plastic containers and bottles.

P1. How do you help animals?

c.-We feed animals in our community park and we treat them if it is

necessary. We also advice pupils to buy only recyclable goods.

P1.An outstanding English writer John Galsworthy said: «If you don’t think
about the future you will not have it.” Let’s think about the future. Let’s
keep our planet tidy and make it better place to live in. Let’s save the Earth
for ourselves and for the next generations.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

2When you see the litter in the streets
And the air smells of pollution
When you feel like it’s all prilling up
Remember there is a solution

There’s something each of us can do

To keep the rivers clean
To keep fresh the air we breathe
To keep the forests green

1Help clean a beach

Or recycle bottles and cans
Learn about the problems we face
And help others understand

It doesn’t have to be a lot

If we each just do our share
So take time out on Earth Day
To show the Earth your care

P1.Children, let’s grow the tree. Look, it hasn’t any leaves. I want you to
give a promise. Collect all your tree leaves and make a Green Tree.

I mustn’t pollute the water

I mustn’t leave litter
I mustn’t cut down trees
I mustn’t drop the litter
I must turn off lights and water
I must keep territory around my house,
school clean
I must feed birds and help them.
I mustn’t wear fur coats
I must keep rivers, lakes and seas clean
I must plant trees and flowers
I must love birds, insects and animals,
help them to survive
I mustn’t use campfire
I must reuse, reduce and recycle

P2. You are absolutely right! What can we reuse, reduce and recycle?

Reuse : glass bottles and tins, metal tins.

Recycle :all kinds of paper, plastic, metal.
Reduce :using electricity, running water.

P1.So stop wasting energy, stop wasting food and supplies, and start helping
those in need, from a poor neighbour to a stray animal. Recycle and donate
and the world will be a better place.

P2.Use bikes or electric cars or walk if it is possible.

P1.Another way of protecting our environment is using alternative natural

energy resources:

 Most types of plastic are recyclable.

 Papers make up 40-50% of landfill space instead of being recycled.
 Glass can be recycled or reused over and over again.
 Old clothes can be reused as rags or for art projects.
 Old wood can be reused, fixed and given away or used as fuel for
fireplace.
 Aluminum is easy to recycle and make into new things.
 Tin can be recycled and quickly made into new things.
 Trash: some things are not recyclable but they make up a small
percentage of what is thrown away.

P2.Students , representatives of Greenpeace have brought a message from

the Earth. Listen to it, please.

“Dear boys and girls,

Take care of me. I’m ill. My water is polluted. The air is dirty.
Don’t cut down the forests . Plant a tree a year. Don’t kill animals
and birds. They may all disappear. Never throw or break glass
bottles. You pollute the land. Take what you need from me. You are
my parts. So, keep me clean and healthy for future generations,
Love, your Earth”.

P1.Now I’m sure you understand the global threats facing our planet, and
you are ready to take actions to improve the situation. You are ready to
pronounce…

I know that our planet is

Take a moment to notice

The beauty of the trees.
Sit and take a look

Always so full of energy;
Humongous amounts of joy.

Don't crush the insects,

Who are 1/1000ths of your weight.
They may creep up your path,

But don't decide their fate.

Life's not about avoiding storms.

The Earth is so beautiful;
Why must we cause it's pain?

Take time off your busy schedule

To glance at the starry night.
Because nature is genius.
So pretty, such a sight!

P1.I hope now you understand that each of us can do at least one thing in
our everyday life and even it can change the world we live in. I believe you'll
do your best to save our planet for ourselves and for future generations.
P2.It’s very important to protect NATURE – our PLANET, because it is our
only home and we have no other one. “If we don’t save our Planet, we will
die”.

P1.Remember, take care of our planet!
