societies transform individual human beings.
Society is not society without individuals who comprise it. As individual seeks for his/her own

fact that along with our development, there were individuals behind of it. Individuals whom we
have relations and connections, for the reason of shared perceptions, beliefs, objectives, and
mechanisms in terms of dealing with the challenges that societal changes had brought to each

relations occurred. On the other hand, societal system has become a significant component

2ND Quarter Week 4

Lesson 1: Death and the Meaning of Life

Activity 1:
Do you believe there is life after death, that there is heaven, and that the soul is immortal?
Yes, or No, Why? Justify your reasons.
I do believe that there is life after death. I also believe that there is heaven where the throne of
Almighty God Creator of life can be found. Although the human body will therefore decompose after
death, inside the human body is an immortal soul that could experience the after life. As far as I know,
our deeds before death would reflect our life after death. An eternal peace and a beautiful abode
known as heaven is the destination of the immortal soul in accordance to the goods deeds that an
individual has done before death. My belief towards the existence of heaven could not be justified by
any justification, it is all about my faith to our Almighty God and knowledge about the holy bible.
Heaven is real according to the Genesis for our Lord God created the world, the heaven and earth.
We, humans was also created by Him.

Let us Practice Checking for Understanding

Activity 2: Direction: Answer the given question.

 Which philosophical view of death do you find most acceptable? Why? Write the statement
and support your answer.

"Those who do not have the courage to be as Paul Tillich put it, meaning those who do not have the
courage to face death, end up living the authentic life of denial manifested in their idle talk, curiosity
and ambiguity. Those who have the courage to face the fact of inevitable death live an authentic
existence, a life of achieving meaningful visions before death takes them, going through the miles to
go before I sleep." These are the statements from the philosophical viewpoint of death by Heidegger.
For me, this is the most acceptable philosophical viewpoint of death. We can't deny the fact that a lot
of individuals could not accept that death is inevitable. Even me as a person, I don't have enough
courage to face death. Though death is inevitable, if you can't really feel that you live your life to the
fullest, you would surely not be prepared of facing death. It became acceptable in a way that it
became a mind and eye-opener for me as an individual to be not afraid of facing death. Just like the
truth and lies. Truth really hurts but it will set you free however lies give you hope but there is
suffering at the end. Just like death, if we have the courage to face the fact of inevitable death, it is a
guarantee to live an authentic life, which means a life without regrets.

Let us Reflect:

Activity 3 Direction: Reflect and expound the philosophy of Heidegger

regarding death?
• Do you agree with Heidegger when he says that our lives are mostly lived in authentically when we
run away from the dread or angst that death give us?
I somewhat like agree with the viewpoint of Heidegger regarding with the authentic life. If we bacame
anxious about something such as death, it seems like our life will surely evolve in the world of angst.
Death is fact and it is inevitable. Although we cannot predict what happened after death, a courage is
all what it takes to face and accept the fact. Everything is temporary even the life, for life has its own
end which is death. If we allow ourself to be aware and accept the reality of death, we could live a
meaningful authentic life knowing that we will value and cherish our life before death takes it.
Moreover, allowing yourself to accept death is also allowing yourself to seek the real essence of life
for you already knew that death is inevitable, thus, as life as it is, you would therefore live it to the
fullest without bringing regrets at the end.

• How do you do the following conditions serve as an example of running away from dread and living
in authentically?
The first stepping stone of running away from dread and living in authentically is to find the courage to
accept the inevitable fact. Courage is something that is difficult to find. However, all you need is to
take risks for you to find the courage for it is the key to accept the inevitable fact.

the things that could lead me to discover the best version of myself. Even if I am uncertain of what the
future brings. I am comforted by the thought/ truth that everything happens for a reason and even
though the process requires a lot of endurance and sufferings, however the ending is still worth it. At
the end of my life, I would like to be able to look back and say that I made it! I live my meaningful life
to the fullest without any regrets.

B. Does the lesson on the human person as being-unto-God help us understand not to fear
death? Yes or No, How? Cite philosophical viewpoint to support your answer.
Yes, the lesson therefore on the human person as being-unto-God help us understand not to fear
death. From the statement of the philosophical viewpoint of Roger Troisfortainess which it describes a
person who replaces the fear of death with the longing for God in the moment in his deathbed. It
doesn't mean that the longing for God will no longer need other in our lives. Embracing the longing for
God allows every individual to give love and hope to his/her fellow men fully and unconditionally as it
was reflected from our love and longing for God in a way that it opens our heart to be compassionate
in offering the unconditional love to the persons around us as it came from the overflowed love from
God. This only means that we must not fear to face the reality of death. If we knew to ourselves that
God is in control of everything, then we have nothing to worry about. As a human being-unto- God,
we are driven with our faith to trust God no matter what, even if it is the time of our death.

Let us Assess
Activity 3: Direction: Answer the given question below in your notebook.

1.After learning from the views of the philosophers about the meaning of life. Compose
a short reflection regarding the meaning of life.
Life is full of uncertainties. As human beings, we are bound to deal with our own strengths and
weaknesses. Differences of any aspects of life and diversified perceptions regarding with the lot of
things in the world is a natural phenomenon the fact that every being is unique in his/her own way.
Accordingly, knowing the world is knowledge but knowing yourself is true wisdom. Amidst the process
of learning from the lessons of philosophy, determining your capabilities and going beyond the
limitations became part of it. As individuals prone to mistakes, we must not forget that mistakes are
normal for this will give you lessons that you could brought for a lifetime. In addition, a way to a better
life is to transcend and aim for development. Sometimes we are afraid of taking risk due to the fact
that we anticipated that failure may come our way. However, failure will not define the process.
Failure is just a part of it and all we need to have is courage. Courage to go beyond our limitations for
something better is waiting ahead of you as you trust the process. In line with this, there is an
inevitable fact that all of us could not deal with but to accept the reality of it. That inevitable fact is
death. According to a philosopher, death is not the goal of life and I strongly agree with it. As human
being with a knowledge about death, a mechanism is a key to live a meaningful life. A mechanism to
live an authentic life whereas accepting the reality of death and living the life as if it is the end.
Moreover, death is unpredictable. No one knows what will happen after life except to the Almighty
One. A life-unto-God is the most effective mechanism for us not to be afraid to face the inevitable fact
of death. It doesn't mean that we don't need anyone in our life, for a life-unto-God means having a
compassionate heart to love each other fully and unconditionally. If we are going to reflect with it, the
love that our Almighty God had given to us is immeasurable and unconditional and that love that we
poured into others is an overflowing love that have been given to us by God. Death should not haunt
us all throughout our life, for death means longing to God. We may never have knowledge what
would happen next after death, however, if we fully trust anything to God and let Him have the control
of our life, there must be no reasons for us to fear the reality of death. Basically, the real meaning of
life is not death. The essence of life is living it as if it is the end and don't let any traces of regrets
paved the way if death finally decided to mark the end of it.
