Article Review:

I am writing a review of the article. The name of the article is “Speech Errors in a talk show
program of Metro TV” that was broadcasted in January to June 2012 and is written by Farida
Indri Wiyanti.

The types of speech errors, their frequency, the prevalent form of speech error, and the causes of
speech errors are all discussed in this article. A speech error, commonly referred to as a slip of
the tongue or misspeaking, is a deviation from the apparently intended form of an utterance. It is
a non-canonical aspect of an utterance that was not intended by the speaker.

The object of the study is the utterances containing speech errors in Metro TV’s talk show, Face to
Face with Desi Anwar. The data source includes documents that are downloaded from
www.youtube.com. The technique used for collecting data in the thesis is documentation
proposed by Marshal. Furthermore the writer applies investigator triangulation that was proposed
by Guion to strengthen the validity. The method used for analyzing data is error analysis that was
proposed by Ellis. It includes Identification, Explanation and Evaluation of Errors.

Speaking is a very complex phenomenon. Whether a person is a first language speaker or a

second language speaker he produces different speech errors while conveying his message.
Errors can occur due to slip of tongue. Errors are very common in any speech but they can be
minimized by taking some steps. There is a phrase “Look before you leap”, sometimes the
speaker talks without thinking that results in an error. The speaker should speak consciously to
avoid wrong words. Most of the speech errors were produced due to situational anxiety and
social reasons that could be minimized.

It is a good article to read.
