Eight Habits of Highly Effective 21st Century Teachers

What does it take to be an effective 21 st century educator? This

is indeed a challenging question which takes a lot of process to be answered.
With the dynamicity of our community, it takes a holistic capacitation to
upgrade ourselves and become a 21 st century educators who has the ability
to inculcate meaningful learning to our learners.

Churches (2008) have identified the eight habits of highly effective 21 st

century teachers that are expected to be possessed by educators. These
includes as being an adaptor, communicator, learners, visionary, leader,
model, collaborator, and risk taker. As I have reflected to these eight (8)
characteristics being mentioned, I can say that it still takes time for me to
develop the mentioned characteristics. For six years that I have been
working in the department, my experiences helped me in gradually
achieving what is ideal. Through the help of my colleagues, the wisdom
garnered from attending seminars, trainings, and workshops in 21 st century
education, and self-reflection, it helped me to go along with the dynamic
changes in the educative process.

Among the eight (8) attributes, I have identified my strengths and

weaknesses which dictates my level to what I am now as a 21 st century
educator. I believe that I have strength in terms of collaborating and
learning for I strongly believe that I should be open to the suggestions and
constructive constructivism of my colleagues for me to learn more and gain
wisdom from others. I consider myself as a lifelong learner because in my
self-assessment, I need to develop holistically to impart meaningful learning
to my students. On the other side, I am weak in terms of risk taking because
I have lot of apprehensions in terms of decision-making. I need to develop on
this side to trust oneself and others. Whatever may the result, either positive
or negative, I must learn to cope up with it and use those experiences in
upgrading oneself.
