Training Methods
Of the following training methods, which ones have been used to train you in an
employment situation or an academic setting? Check all that apply. Also include any
methods that you have used to train other employees.
On-the-Job Methods
Job Shadow- unstructured- trainee observes how to do the job, employee explains
to the trainee what he or she is doing, trainee attempts to do job
Job Instruction training- good for jobs with a logical sequence of steps. Steps are
often written down and an experienced employee demonstrates how to do the job
through a formalized, structured and systematic approach
Performance Aid- a device that helps an employee do his/her job- written
instructions that trainee follows on own
Job Rotation- trainee is trained on a number of jobs of a similar skill level by
rotating from one to the next over a period of weeks or months
Coaching- seasoned employee provides feedback and reinforcement- works
closely with trainee
Mentoring- senior employee counsels and supports a junior employee
Informal learning- learning through interaction with others
Off-the-Job Methods
Classroom training which includes:
Lectures, seminars
Discussions
Audiovisual Techniques
Case Study- discuss, analyze and solve problems based on a real situation
Behaviour Modeling- observe someone, then imitate the behaviour
Role Play- practice newly learned skills

Programmed learning- information is provided, trainee responds, immediate
feedback is given (works well with Computer based training)
Vestibule or Simulated Training- work environment is replicated in a training
room- same type of equipment, software etc.
Computer based training- CBT
Online Training- web based training (e-learning)

Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS)- computer based job aids
