REMBRANT PAINTING (SUMMARY OF TOEFL READING)

The article is about a famous painting of Rembrandt which the passage discusses if the
painting was truly made by him, the article explains three reasons of support. However, the
professor counter each argument by saying that there are several reasons to believe that the
painting was done by Rembrandt .

First, the article claims that there ara a few incongruences about the painting in comparison of
Rembrant style. The Ex rays pigments in the colors shows a significative difference compared
to Rembrandt original paintings . Originally Rembrandt is very careful with the details.
However, the professor says that the ex-ray’s pigment in the color was not from the original
paint, the professor concludes saying that the colors were manipulated in order to give to the
painting a higher value.

Second, the reading posits that the light and shadow details do not fit together because of the
variaton of illumination of light in the face of the woman. However, the professor claims that
the light reflected in woman’s face was a effect of the collar making a very realistic effect,
tactiques of paintings original of Rembrandt.

Finally, the reading affirms that the elements of the painting were not the originals of
Rembrandt. The painting was made in pieces of wood glued together. However, the professor
says that is the original due to the fact that the painting was glued by pieces of wood in order
to enlarge the painting to giving more value. Another reason of support is that the pieces of
wood were the same that Rembrandt used in other paintings.
