Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Dressmaking/Tailoring Grade Grade 7 Self-Learning Module

on Body Measurements Vertical and Horizontal Measurements!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

LESSON 6: Body Measurements:

Vertical and Horizontal Measurements

Great clothes start with accurate measurements!

One of the importance of sewing your clothes is getting a personalized fit, and
that is achieved through accurate measurements. To achieve this, aside from having
the right tools and equipment, you also need to know how to measure accurately.
Correct measurements are vital to the success of your garment. In using the tape
measure, it should be a bit snug, but not tight. Neither should it be loose. Consider
ease for movement when measuring. You should be able to put at least one to two
fingers behind the tape.

Some General Guidelines in Taking Body Measurement

1. Choose a good and accurate tape measure.
2. It is better to wear fitted clothes when measuring.
3. Stand straight when being measured. Keep measurement level.
4. Follow the old motto, “Measure twice, cut once.”
5. Have a notebook and pen to record measurements.
6. Get help. It is better to have someone assist you.

Parts of the body to be measured can be taken in :

A. VERTICAL MEASUREMENT
B. HORIZONTAL MEASUREMENT
C. CIRCUMFERENTIAL MEASUREMENT
4
For this lesson we will first discuss VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL measurements.

A. VERTICAL MEASUREMENTS- Are body measurements taken from the top

of the body to its base.

1. Down Center Back- taken from the

nape of the neck passing
over the fullest part of the
back down to the waistline.

tip of the shoulder down to the
desired level of sleeve.

5. Crotch or Rise – taken

from the waistline down to the
curved part of the crotch.

5
6. Skirt/Pants Length- taken from
the waistline to the desired length
of the shirt /pants.
