Vernier Caliper
A vernier caliper is a visual aid to take an accurate measurement reading
between two graduation markings on a linear scale by using mechanical
interpolation; thereby increasing resolution and reducing measurement
uncertainty by using vernier acuity to reduce human estimation error.
Parts of Vernier Caliper:
• Main Sale: It gives measurement up to one decimal places.
• Vernier Scale: It gives measurement up to two places.
• Knob: It use for the easy movement of jaws.
• Depth Prob: It is used to measure depth or hole.
• Outer Jaws: It used to measure external gaps or width of an object.
• Internal Jaws: It used to measure internal gaps/internal diameter of an
object.
• Locking Screw: It should be locked when object is placed in between the
jaws.
Least Count:
It is the minimum value that can be measure from any instrument very precisely.
It means that the L.C is the degree of accuracy of that instrument.
L.C = Minimum reading on main scale / Total division on vernier scale.
Least count = 0.05 mm
Zero Error
It occurs when jaws of vernier caliper are fully closed but zeros of main
scale and vernier scale not coincides. This can be reduced by adding or
subtracting according to whatever it is positive or negative error.
Procedure:
• At first check the zero error.
• Placed the object in between the jaws and lock the screw.
• Read the main scale readings.
• Note the vernier scale reading that coincides with main scale.
• Count the division from left that coincides with main scale and multiply
with least count and add in reading which is noted from main scale
