Jesus– the Center of Our Life
You will notice on the front of today’s bulletin
that this Sunday is dedicated to the memory of St.
Gregory of Palamas. It was through the influence of our
late Patriarch Joseph that St. Gregory Palamas (1296-
1359) was re- introduced into our calendar by the
Congregation of the Oriental Churches. He is
remembered today, the Second Sunday of the Great Fast.
St. Gregory was a man of many talents: monk, hermit,
and archbishop of Thessalonica. Above all, he was
considered to be a master of the spiritual life.
Through his teachings, a prayer
life, which is unique to our Rite, was
introduced and is called the “Prayer of
Quiet”. Its characteristics are: 1)
devotion to the name of Jesus; 2) a deep
sorrow for sin; and 3) the discipline of
frequent repetition of the name of Jesus.
All this is aimed at attaining a deep inner
peace and silence within our soul.
Patriarch Joseph saw the importance of re
-introducing this type of prayer into our
church after many years of neglect.
The method of this prayer is
known simply as “The Jesus Prayer”.
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have
mercy on me, a sinner.” One of our
spiritual fathers, Gregory of Sinai,
commented that this prayer is very much
in accord with our baptism. He saw it as
the means by which the presence of the St. Andrew of Crete
Holy Spirit given to us in Baptism is
made conscious by the recitation of this
prayer. St. Gregory saw this prayer as a means of
transfiguring our life.
The Byzantine Church sees man and woman as
being a divine icon. Through the use of the Jesus Prayer,
our lives can be transformed slowly into a living icon of
the Trinity.
The Jesus Prayer may be pronounced vocally or
in one’s thoughts. It can be practiced at all times and in
all places.
The Lenten season is a time of spiritual labor and
effort. It is a time to spiritually energize ourselves, to
wake ourselves up, to motivate ourselves to grow
spiritually. It requires an effort to rise up from spiritual Resurrection” (from Morning Prayer for the Monday of
laziness and indifference. During the Lenten season, we

have this Kondak from the service of Repentance of St.
Andrew of Crete:
“My soul, my soul, arise!
Why are you sleeping?
The end of your life is at hand
Come to your senses
That you may be spared by Christ, our God.”
With this in mind, we can then turn to the picture
of the Paralytic in today’s Gospel reading. (Mark 2:1-
12). Needing forgiveness and healing, he is carried to
Jesus. Can this be a picture of us? What part of your life
is paralyzed? What part of your life needs healing?
Have past hurts; anger and resentment brought you to
become a cold un-loving person? What
in your life needs forgiveness? And, let
us remember that we are open to Christ’s
forgiveness only as long as we are open
to forgive others.
During this Lenten season, we are called
upon to see our soul sickness and spiritual
incapacities. We come into the presence
of God for his healing touch of
forgiveness.
During this coming week, we will
be reading the story of the Great Flood
and the salvation of Noah and the Ark.
This is a symbol of our baptism through
which we were rescued from sin and
brought into the saving grace of Christ.
The Kondak for the week: “In your anger,
Christ our God, during the days of Noah,
you submerged the ocean of sin by your
power. In our days, you renew the world
by baptism, and in the days to come you
will purify the earth by fire. Save us
from your anger through your love for us,
O Redeemer of all.”
Prayer in honor of St. Gregory: “O light of true
faith, teacher and support of the Church, adornment of
monks and invincible rampart of theologians, O holy
Gregory the Wonderworker, the glory of Thessalonica
and herald of grace, intercede with God for the salvation
of our souls”.
And, as we begin the third week of the Great
Fast: “In this third week of the Fast, O thrice-holy Lord,
watch over those who are fasting. Make us persevere in
the observance of your commandments, so that, in all
purity, we may contemplate and celebrate your glorious

селі Страдч.
Особливу духовну значимість цим реколекціям
надала ікона блаженного мученика о.Миколи
Конрада, привезена з України о.Іваном. Кожен
бажаючий мав можливість поклонитись перед
цією іконою та скласти свої молитви та прохання
о. Іван Проповідує Молебень
Fr. Ivan Delivers the Homily Moleben
Our parish hosted Ukrainian-language Lenten
Missions between Sunday and Wednesday of this past
week. The missions were led by Fr. Ivan Koltun, pas-
tor of the pilgrimage church in Stradch, Ukraine.
One of the spiritual highlights of this year’s
mission was the miraculous icon of the blessed father-
martyr Mykola Konrad, which Fr. Ivan brought from
his mission parish. The faithful had the opportunity to
venerate this icon, expressing prayers and supplica-
tions to the blessed father-martyr. A moleben to the

Thursday.
In his homilies, Fr. Ivan stressed the impor-
tance of a sincere expression of the Mystery of Recon-
ciliation, heartfelt prayer, and the general positive atti-
tude toward prayer and good deeds.
We express great gratitude to Fr. Ivan for ex-
plaining God’s Word at our parish. May the Lord God
bless him in his difficult work, and may He grant him
many, happy, and healthy years. ♦

Ukrainian Catholic Appeal - SHARE 2011
The 2011 Ukrainian Catholic Appeal – SHARE,
"Feeding the flock: 50 years as Church" will
begin the weekend of March 13, 2011, the first
Sunday of Lent. Please support our Eparchy.
CHARITABLE TAX STATEMENT
This year in order to save money (printed statements
and envelopes) we are requesting those who are inter-
ested in getting a statement that they call the office
(773) 625-4805. We found that many, many parishion-
ers do not pick up their statements, which then we
need to shred. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sorokusty
This is a Lenten service, during which memorial
prayers are read for all who have fallen asleep in the
Lord. If you would like our priests to pray for your
deceased loved ones, please submit the names on
the envelopes which can be found at the entrance of
the church .Sorokousty will be served every Saturday
after the 9:00 am Divine Liturgy beginning on Satur-
day, March 12th.
Remember, praying for deceased relatives and friends
is an obligation of every Christian
