Impact numbers:
Receiving investments early on is an important step for start-ups to grow and eventually
reach more advanced investment stages. Obtaining early stage investments is
challenging in every market across the world. From this challenge has sprouted angel
investor networks, which primarily aim to facilitate this important growth for start-ups.
In Sudan, start-up ecosystem are relatively new. Thus, angel investment activity is also
relatively new. These investments are provided by locals, for locals or by diaspora
members (who play a major role thanks to expertise, access to foreign markets, and
access to hard currencies). Angel investor networks in Sudan do not yet exist.
Hashim Eltoum (23 years old student) started a breakdown assistance service for
cars called Monjid under the Orange Corners Incubation programe. Since then,
he’s already completed above 5,000 orders and 100+ mechanics have signed up
Hashim was inspired by finding a problem to his father’s car brokedown. Monjid
provides emergency roadside assistance through motorcycles. People whose
requests are less urgent, for instance like changing a tire or jump-starting a car with
a dead battery, you can ask for a mobile mechanic via the call center or the app.
So, it’s a bit like Uber for breakdown assistance.’
One year after graduaring from the incubcation program Monjid managed to
secure a 6 figures USD seed round investment from GlobeTech through a deal
facilitated by 249Startups post the Annual demo day . The kick-off tractions of
Monjid was initially backed by a impact loan he received from 249Startups in
addition to mentorship and networks by 249Startups Directors .
