GENERAL GUIDELINES

 Focus: Your focus is sufficiently narrow (i.e. you do not stray off topic). Your thesis
statement is clearly defined, well-developed, and serves as the guiding force for the
contents of your essay. Your essay should also include a hook statement in the
introduction, compare and contrast structured body paragraphs and a conclusion
paragraph.

 Mechanics: Your paper is “clean.' Mistakes in punctuation, usage, grammar, spelling,
etc. are minimal. Any mistakes that are present do not interfere with the reader's ability to
understand your essay. Your essay is unified and coherent. Your tone and style of writing
are congruent with your subject matter.

 Format: You follow APA guidelines. Your essay must have a title page and a reference
page (not counted in the page count).  The essay should be written primarily in third
person voice, but can use first person voice when using the writer's own experience as
evidence.

 In addition, you will turn in your essay in a folder. Inside the folder you will include the
final essay, all previous drafts of the essay, and your peer review sheet.
