Benefits of Choosing M.I.C.E Rated Components

• Already tested to withstand the severity of the

associated M.I.C.E element
• When choosing network cabling systems
always consider the components that are able
to withstand the worst case environment to
which it is exposed.
• Commercial grade network components
(M1I1C1E1) can also be considered when

Why Structured Cabling on the Plant Floor

Is a Best Practice
• Same cabling concept is used with I/O and
terminal strips
• Manage the backbone separate
from the patch to the controller –
through a terminal strip or IFM
• Predictable and eases MACs

Point-to-Point Cabling
Cabling Subsystem 1

• Typically applied on machine or equipment at

the edge of physical network
• Method not scalable plant-wide, used in
conjunction with Structured Cabling
• Definition: Single cable terminated to plugs
‒ Patch cord, cord-set or field terminated cable
‒ Most often copper with stranded conductors
‒ Less prone to break with repeated flex
‒ Must de-rate length
‒ Standard plugs hard to terminate reliably in
field, especially for higher bandwidth cable
‒ Testing limited vs. structured cabling (often
green light only)

Ethernet looks different at the Edge, Here is Why?

Ethernet
• Edge devices are the originator of all data in
the control system Power

• In order to protect the network at the edge,

The ethernet connection points have to be
M.I.C.E compliant

Network Cable Requirements

Inside Equipment and Control Panels
• Voltage rating of the cable jacket
‒ Ethernet cables may be rated at 300 Volts
‒ Voltage rating marked on the cable jacket
‒ UL Listed type CM cable is rated 300 Volts
‒ This type of cable (and patch cords) is suitable
where no other cables in the enclosure are 480V Motor
labeled at higher voltage 300V Cable
and VFD 300V rated patch
cord with RJ45
• Ethernet cables near power or
600V Cable
control cables rated 600 volts should 600V rated patch
cord with RJ45
have a 600 volt rating clearly visible
on the cable jacket

TM

What does 600V Rated Mean for Network Cabling?

• Network cabling is NOT designed or intended to
carry high voltages

• Network cables can be exposed to high voltage

cables in UL 508A control panels
‒ near power or control cables rated 600 volts
‒ cross power conductors at right angles and not routed alongside

• 600V rated network cables are typically UL

listed as Appliance Wire Material (AWM)
