TECHNICAL FIELD. ‘This invention lates toa rolling mill edger, for plate and Steckel mills. particule ‘TECHNICAL BACKGROUND “There isa tend in current plate and Steckel mils for the rolling of shorter feed stock such as short (usually thick) slabs or ingots. Typically, feed stock has been of the oder of 3 to 4 meters of longer in length, but aow there is @ Feqjirement to roll feed stock that is oaly of the onder of 2 to 3 meters of less in length. This is particularly applicable in the ease of plate mills rolling products from thick slabs or ‘ingots and Steckel mills rolling “exotic” materials eg. ie nium and nickel grades. These short slabs or ingots pose & particular problem ith the operation of the edger Rolling mill edger are used to maintain a requted width ‘of the slab asi is processed. The edgers typically comprise work rolls mounted at either side of a centerline an a section ‘ofa path over which the feed stock is moved in its various forms, for convenience referred to asa slab, but encompass- ing other forms from feedstock to finished product. The ‘work roll separation is adjustable according to the plate ‘with required, Idler rolls extend aero the center part othe path, mounted with thir roll axis pemendicularto and in the ame plane as the centerline, Feod mills are provided across a substantial pat of the full width ofthe path ahead of or beyond the eder section of the path and these eed rolls are ‘ypically driven directly from motors via deive shafts, of sometimes using a gearbox, However, in the edger section of the path, betwen the edger work rolls, there arc usually ony idler roils. This is not a problem if the slabs are of a ‘conventional length as atleast a part of the slab is always resting on driven ros inthe path outside the edger section. However, for short slabs, there may be atime in the rolling ‘eycle when no part of the slab ison # driven rolle and the slabs get stuck. Replacing the idler rollers with driven rollers Jn the section between the edger work rolls ha the disad- vantage that edger works roll changes are made more com- plicated hecause of the need to remove the driven rollers ia that section to allow access for a oll change. Unlike the ‘existing idler rollers, driven rollers cannot be simply lifted ‘out, but would have to be disconnected from their pear and ‘rive mechsauism, JPS3671508 describes rolling equipaieat ‘which can roll both plate and hot coil by providing aa intermediate roller table which is raised inwo postion for plate rolling, JPS6138706 describes an edging mill provided ‘with a pair of nonsriven edging rolls which are movable in, the sheet width direction, to raduce the cost and space requirements assoeisted with driven rolls SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance witha first aspect ofthe present invention, ‘rolling mill edger comprises a pair of work rolls and a feed 0 o 2 roll assembly; wherein the feed rol assembly comprises one ‘or more diven fee eolls and drive means; wherein the feed rollassembly is mounted on a moveable mount such thatthe ‘ood roll assembly is movable between an operative rolling positon inthe edger and roll change position in the edger and wherein the moveable mount comprises pivot. “The driven feed rolls and ther drive means are moved out of their operative positon to allow a roll change to take place in the space that they occupy ia nonmal rolling ‘operation. Typically, the moveable mount rotates or pivots Proferabl, the pivot comprises an input shal of the pearbox. belt drive or chain drive Preferably, the dive a gearbox, a belt deve: Preferably, the edger comprises wo feed rll assemblies and moveable mounts. ‘A feed rll assembly on a moveable mount is provided on cach side, inthe direction of travel of the plate, ofthe gap in which the edger work rolls are able to move. Preferably, the edger further comprises ane oF more $60 part split driven feed roll and the one oF more dven feed rolls ofthe feed roll assembly are mounted between the two parts of one split driven feed rll Preferably the edger further comprises a common support {o suppor the evo parts ofthe split driven feed rolls and the rive means, In one embosliment, the drive means comprises a motor and a pearbox and the edger further comprises one or more ‘wo part spit driven feed rolls and the one or more driven {eed ols ofthe feed rll assembly are mounted between the ‘so parts of one spit driven feed roll and wherein the input shaft ofthe gearbox is coupled to one part ofthe split driven ood coll and adapted o be driven by the one part of the split riven feed roll. Preferably; the other part of the split driven feed rol is coupled to the input shal of the pearbox and adapted t0 be riven by the input shaft ofthe gearbox, In accordance with a second aspect ofthe preset inven ‘ion, @ method of carrying out edger work roll ange in @ rolling mill edger according to the frst aspect comprises pivoting the driven feed rolls away from an operative rolling Position and moving a fint work roll ino the location vacated by the driven feed rolls ofthe feed rol assembly: lifting the first work rll out of the edger iting a second ‘work rll into the edger to replace the frst work rll; moving the second work rll away from the operative rolling posi- tion of the driven feed rolls of the feed roll assembly: and pivoting the driven feed rolls ofthe feed roll asserubly back ino their operative rolling postion. Preferably, the diven feed rolls are pivoted about a shalt of a leed roll drive ‘mechanism, the first work roll is removed and renovated, it may be returned tothe edger asthe second work ral, aera period ‘of ime has elapsed, but preferably, the second work rol is llerent from the fist work roll Preferably, he input shai of the gearbox i driven by one part ofthe spit driven Jee rol. Prelerably, the other part of {he split driven feed rolls driven via the input shaft of the gearbox. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION An example of a rolling mill edger according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIG. The edger work rolls 1, are driven by electric motors 8 via respective gearboxes 9 and driveshafts 10, Altering the separation of the edger work rolls 1,2 about a eeuterline 11 ofthe edger, by moving the chocks 3,4, allows the edger to be adapted tothe width ‘of slab to be rolled. In FIG. 1, a wide slab 19a is shown, In FIG. 2, narrow slab 19) is shown, As shown in FIGS. 34 ‘and 38, driven feed rolls 12, 13, 14, 15 are used to support the sla, hut because the edger work rolls 1, 2 move as iMlustated by the artows 16, these feed rollers have to be ‘mounted at distance from a cenerline 17 ofthe edger work roll, 0 as not to obstruct the movement of the edger work rolls. The centerline 17 is perpendicular wo the direction of travel 20 of the slab, Typically, the pitch between the two Jnnennost driven feed rolls 13, 14 approximately 2000 mim, ie, 1000 mm either side of the edger work roll ‘centerline 17. In heween the innermost driven feed rollers there are usualy only idler rolls 18 (i.e. undiven rolls). The reason that these idler rolls 18 are ot driven is that there is very litle space available fora drive mechanism. As can be seen in FIG. 2, when the edger is edging nar slabs 19 there is only ® very small gap between the edger roll assemblies 12.3.4 and the idler rolls 18 and there is not ‘enough spece to install driveshafts for these idler rolls. "The foet that these idler rolls 18 are not driven causes problems with the transport of short slabs 19 or ingots Through the eder because the slab or ingot can get stuck ia 4 postion where it is not being drivea by any of the driven Teseollers. This illustrated in more detail in FIGS, 3a and 3b. Ashort slab 19 moving ina direction of travel shown by ‘te aerow 20 loses contat with the driven food rolls 12, 13 before it comes into contact with the driven feed rolls 14, 18. This problem is particularly pronounced if no edging is being done om the slab, or ingot so thatthe edger rolls 1, 2 ‘re not in coataet with the slab 19 or ingot. In this situation, 0 o 4 the slab or ingot only makes it through the edger if it has sullicent momentum 10 keep it moving. There might be some assistance from the edges ofthe slab resting on the top of the flanges of the edger work rolls but, particularly in the case of ingots which are usually tapered, this contact may be ‘minimal or not present at all. There may also be small ler rolls mounted on the front face of the bottom edger roll chock. These provide some support for the slab or ingot, but they are not ususlly driven, Whilst in peineipal it would be possible to drive these support rollers it isnot very practical ‘due to limited space availabe, “To overcome this problem, some edgers use short, driven {eed roles which are gear driven from the center of the innermost fll width fed roller. The ianermost driven food roller is divided into two parts and in between the two parts there is a gearbox which drives the small feed rollers which are located between the edger work rolls. Bithera single pair ‘of short feed eos ate driven via the gearbox, ar two oF miore short fed rolls are driven from each side, via a train of gears Although, this design addresses the problem of transporting short slabs through the edger, it introduces another problem. The edger work rolls need to be changed at regular intervals die to wear. The most common method of ehang- ing the roll assemblies is wo lift them vertically out of the edger housing as showa ia PIG. 4 Is convenient ia many Jarge plate mill edgers to lift them with a hook 21 on the centerline 11 of the edger. One reason for this i that the learboxes 9 and motors 8 and driveshafts 10 interfere with iting the edger rll assemblies at ober positions, Another reason is that because the central position is @ non-working positon itis easy to arrange for the edger rol assembly to isengage from the guides, typically slide stops 22, which retain the edger roll assembly in the edger roll housing $ ‘during normal opeeation when the edger rll assembly is in ‘a non-central position, as lustrated in FIG. SF and allow it to be sfc out in the central position as illustrated in FIG. Se, 0 this simplifies the roll change. Consequently many edgers move the work rll assembly into this eeutral position for roll change as illustrated in FIG. 4 In order to allow the edger rll assembly to move to this ceatral postion the idler rolls 18 which are illustrated in FIGS. 1,2 and 3 have to be lifted out first. In the ease of simple son-driven idler rll this is straightforward because the group of idler rolls is mounted on a common hase which an be simply lifted ou by an attachment on the same lifting hook 21 which is then used to remove the edger rolls 1,2 However, inthe case of the gear driven short feed rollers referred to above, this is not possible. The gearboxes and short feed-rollers cannot simply be lifted out forthe edger roll change, Consequently, the edger roll change is made more complex because the guides 22 which retain the edger roll assemblies in the edger roll housing § have to be ‘unbolted in order to take out the edger rolls 1, 2 in @ ‘on-central postion. Ths, the current options are to use an edger with idler rolls, which is better for the edger roll change, but is not very dood at transporting short slabs or ingots through the edger, fro use an elger with gear driven shoet feed rollers, which js beter at transporting shor slabs or ingots, but makes the roll change more complex. DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION “The present invention addresses the roll change problem associated with the gear driven type short feed rollers US 10,328,471 B2 5 Instead of the fxed gearbox and short driven rollers used to ensure that @ short slab is aot stuck on idler rolls the ‘invention provides a assembly with deiven rollers which is maveable between an operative, rolling postion and a roll ‘change position. The drive mechanism foe the deiven rollers may he via a gearbox, a chain drive, o a belt drive, earbox is preferred de to high loa, so the examples will be described with reference to a gearbox. However, they should be read as being equally applicable to the ease of & chain or belt deve or other similar drive mechanism, lustrated by the embodiment of FIGS. $A and SC, this can be achieved by using short driven fed rollers 23, ‘one or more feed rollers, oF one oF more pats of such feed rollers, tached to and driven by a drive mechanism, in this ‘example via a gearbox 24, which can rotate about its input shaft 25, so thatthe gearbox and short rollers can move between a working position 54 (FIG. SC) where the short ‘eed rollers fit between the edger rolls 12 and can be used to transport slabs through the edger as ilustrated in FIGS. SA and SC and all change position 85 (FIG. 8D) in which the gearbox and the short feed rolls are rotated out of the space between the edger roll assemblies as illustrated in FIG. SD so thatthe edger rll assemblies can be moved into this space for roll change as illustrated in FIGS. SB and SE. A single rotating gearbox may be connected 10 all ofthe one ‘or more feed rollers, or one oF more pairs of feed rollers, oF 4 rotting gearbox may be provided on each side of the ‘edger, contected to the feed rollers on that sie. One or more non-drven idler rollers §% may be used in addition to the shor driven feed rollers 23 as illustrated in FIG. SC. "The moveable assembly comprising the gearbox 24 and short driven feed rollers 28 may be completely separate from the food rollers 13 and 14, for example the gearbox may be mounted underneath the fill width, Teed roller and have @ separate drive shall to the input shat 28, Duc to the limited space available though, itis preferable (0 drive the input shaft 28 of the gearbox 24 fiom a haf feed roller 3a as iMlustated in FIG, SG, A respective motor 4S drives each drive shaft 46 to in tum drive a espoctve half feed roller 13a, The input shaft 25 passes right through the geatbox 24 and drives another half feed roller 136. Bearings 26 and bearing suppors 27 which support inner ends 28 ofthe half {eed roller 13a and 13h and the gearbox are seperate from the gearbox 24 itself, Inthe conventional design with short driven roles, the gearbox ilsell supports the inner ends of the half feed rollers because the gearbox is fixed, The ‘cantilevered end 28 of the gearbox 24 i supported on a stop 29 inthe nommal operation position shown in FIG. SC. This ‘op may be adjustable or the stop may simply be shimmed during installation tose the short feed roller 23 atthe comet height. The cantilevered end 28 of the gearbox 24 is pre- vented fiom moving upwards during normal operation by & simple pin or similar mechanism (n01 shown). Alternatively, a remotely operated latch, either mechanical or hydraulic, may be used. However, given the environment in this area and the relatively infzeguent edger roll changes. simple pin ‘or similar system is sulicient. For the edger roll change, the cantilevered gearboxes 24 ‘are moved into the rll change position as illustrated i FIGS. $B and SD. The pin or other mechanism which prevents the gearboxes from moving upwards is withdrawn And the gearboxes ae lifted and pulled into the roll change position 50 by an attachment on the same crane attachment 21 shich is used forthe edger roll change. There isa stop (not shown) for the roll change position of the gearbox 10 prevent the short feed rolls 28 from making diret contact with the fll width feed rolls 12,1. The system may inelude 0 o 6 hydraulic cylinders or alternative mechanisms fo move the gearbox from the normal operation position to the roll ‘change positon, if desired, but this is not estentil as edger roll changes take place elatively infrequently. Replacement fof the gearboxes aller the edger roll change has boca completed is done by simply reversing the sequence. FIG. 6 shows the steps ofthe typical roll change proces. ‘When it has boen determine that an edger work oll requires changing, rolling ceases 30. Any retainer that holds the assembly comprising the drive mechanism and feed rolls place is withdrawn M1 to allow the drive and feed roll assembly to move. The assembly is attached 32 the iting device and movement out of the central area of the edger into the rll change position is initiated 38. Typically this ‘cans tht the lifting device pivots the assembly about the gearbox input shat. At step 34 the drive shaft 10 is dotsched Irom the edger work rol as illustrated in FIG. 4. At step 38 the edger work rol assembly to be replaced is moved into the central area by cylinder $2 and detached from the cylinder 82, The eylinder 52 is then moved back out ofthe ‘ay to allow the Tifting device to be attached 36 and the work rol assembly is lied out of the edger. The new work rolls lied 37 into the central area of the edger using the lifting device, detached from this device and the cylinder $2 is moved into position and attached 38 to the work roll assembly. ‘The work roll assembly is then moved 39 out of the central atea and the driveshaft is reanached 40. The lifting device pivots 41 the drive and fed rll assembly back into position inthe central area, Any retainers forthe drive ‘and feed roll assembly are replaced 42 and rolling can resume 48, Thus, the edger ofthe present invention sable to combine riven shor feed rolls to make transporting of shor slabs land ingots through the edger much easier witha clear central position for edger roll change. Rotation, or pivoting, of the gearbox and short feed roller assemblies about the gee input shaft moves the gearbox and short feed roller assemblies ‘ofthe window fr ol change and ths allows the edger rolls fo be changed in a central postion which is moch simpler than changing the edge rolls ina non-central position. There js no need to detach the gearbox and feed rolls at any stage in the process. atching and movemeat between the normal operation position of the drive mechanism and feed rolls and the rol change position may be carried out manually, oF may be flomated and operate under control of a controller (not shown). ‘The invention claimed is 1.
