UAS ACD READING

M.DAFFA AUFA RIFQI AMRAN/200110101016

Although all four have published extensively, this chapter will focus on nine of their
picture books. These picture books, published between 1975 and 2002 and spanning almost a
thirty-year period, are indicators of how much their illustrations have evolved over the years to
reflect the dynamism of African cultures and what messages these illustrators communicate
about Africa. As Ellen Handler Spitz (1999) notes, “[e]ven when they are not intended to do so,
picture books provide children with some of their earliest takes on morality, taste, and basic
cultural knowledge, including messages about gender, race, and class” (p. 14). A major part of my
discussion will dwell on the subtle ways these illustrators’cultural backgrounds may have in
advertently affected the messages they paint in their pictures.

Write down the gist/main idea/important information that you are reading in three
sentences at most.

This chapter that is being focused on containing nine picture books, reaching out almost
thirty years, are signs of how much their illustrations have changed better over the years to
describe the dynamism of African cultures and what messages these illustrators mean about
Africa.
