WELCOME
To our SPRING/SUMMER SEASON 2011.
Since 1955 we’ve championed new writing.
This summer the SJT celebrates two
significant milestones: we present our 300th
commissioned play, which is also Alan
Ayckbourn’s 75th play – Neighbourhood

Last year over 100,000 people came to the SJT
for a cracking night out. 35,000 people up and
down the country saw our work on tour. Over
all it was a very successful year.

A Stephen Joseph Theatre Company, Scarborough,
Octagon Theatre Bolton and Hull Truck Theatre production

By Arthur Miller
Directed by David Thacker
Designed by Patrick Connellan

5 – 30 April
In the attic of a soon to be demolished house in
1968 New York, two brothers meet for the first
time in sixteen years to sell off the possessions
left by their deceased father. Victor had wanted
to be a scientist, but settled for life as a cop on
the New York streets, while Walter left home
to become an eminent surgeon. Reunited,
they set about dealing with the pain and
misunderstanding that lies at the heart of their
relationship, and the sacrifices they have both
made.

As they confront their history, eighty-nine year

old furniture dealer, Soloman haggles over the
remnants of their lives, ready to offer a fair deal.
After all, everything has a price.

Written by Arthur Miller, author of The Crucible,

A View From The Bridge and Death Of A
Salesman, The Price is a compassionate family
drama that is funny, surprising and heart-
rending. It is directed by David Thacker who
had a close working relationship with the writer.

Paris, the 1970s. Legendary screen and stage actress,
Marlene Dietrich, now in her seventies, is preparing for her
evening’s solo performance...

In the twilight years of her career and acutely aware of her

celebrity status, Marlene is as fierce as ever. But backstage,
as she gossips, gives press interviews and appears the
demanding diva, we glimpse the nerves, the pressure and
the need for applause.

Singer, actress, Hollywood star, glamorous beauty, wartime

idol and cabaret performer, Marlene was a showbiz
legend. Interspersed with much-loved songs of a bygone
era, including You Do Something To Me, Le Vie En Rose,
Lili Marlene and Falling In Love Again, this is a moving
celebration of the woman behind the myth.

A new version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya
Presented by arrangement with David Pugh
& Daffydd Roger

7 July – 30 September
“I’m the only living thing without a life. Isn’t that
terrible? With a past that was entirely wasted
and a present bordering on the ridiculous.”
Marcus loves Eleanor although she’s already
married and can never be his. His schoolgirl
niece Sonya is secretly in love with David, the
family doctor and confirmed bachelor, which in
her heart of hearts she knows is probably all in
vain. And to make things still more hopeless,
as days go by, Eleanor and David appear to
be developing an attraction which is surely
unthinkable. As summer comedy grows into
autumnal farce, things inevitably lead to winter
regrets both for what has occurred and what
might have been.
Set in the Lake District in 1935, Alan
Ayckbourn’s reworking of Uncle Vanya
brings an affectionate English slant to Anton
Chekhov’s classic love story.

the ills of modern suburban existence are on

Newcomers Martin and his sister Hilda are the
