SECTION 2: COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVENESS (10 points)

Purpose/Directions: To identify your understanding of and skill at effective communicative

behaviors; to identify important communication behaviors in situations relevant to your life. To
do so, please address the following questions.

1. Describe an interpersonal area in which you would like to communicate more

effectively (e.g., maintaining a conversation with someone I don’t know very
well).

○ An interpersonal area that I would like to communicate more effectively

would be meeting new people and being able to maintain a conversation
with them. I tend to have social anxiety at times which makes it extremely
difficult to communicate with people I don’t know well.

2. Describe a person you know who communicates effectively in this area (e.g.,
my brother Tyson) and his/her behavior (e.g., he asks genuine questions to get
to know the other person better, compliments him/her, and continuously
smiles at him/her).

○ A person I know who communicates effectively in this area is my dad. He

always seems to make new friends where ever we go. He’s the type of person
to approach someone first a begin a conversation. I noticed that he always
relates to the person he’s talking to, then they end up talking for hours, and
eventually, they have plans to hang out somehow.

3. Describe how you could apply these behaviors (e.g., I can stop thinking about
how nervous I am and focus on what the other person is saying so that I can
note our common interests).

○ I can stop thinking that everyone is watching and completely judging me for
approaching someone and starting a conversation.
