Equal Community

Having the opportunity to build an equal community hardly ever comes. It’s very rare,

especially on a different planet. We could build one where you don’t have to fight for equal

rights. Where you aren’t treated any less than what you deserve, and it doesn’t matter who you

are. We could have a community where we feel safe, comfortable, and have equal

opportunities. We have a chance at that, but we need to address some issues.

In our Mars Community, we want everyone to feel free to go anywhere without being

downgraded. To do this, we need to make people understand that no one is superior to one

another. An author stated, “Men will see themselves as superior to women and will treat them in

a patronizing manner” (Yi). This evidence shows that people see themselves as better than

others. They will treat them as if they are lower than them which could make them feel less. No

one should feel like this. At times, they won’t even notice that they do, which is why they

continue to do so. Not only are females being treated unequally, but they are also getting paid

unequally.

Women working full time make less than a male would in the same field. “For context, a

woman working full time, year round earned $10,194 less than her male counterpart, on

average, in 2018. If this wage gap were to remain unchanged, she would earn about $407,760

less than a man over the course of a 40-year career” (Blelwis). This piece of evidence shows

that females and males are not being paid the same. The pay gap could be wider for women of

race/ethnicity. The whole point of trying to find life on Mars is to feel like we could have a fresh

start. To make changes. Not only is the pay gap a problem, but women also tend to have fewer

opportunities than men.

Being limited on doing the things you want to do is very upsetting. “Globally, women

have fewer opportunities for economic participation than men, less access to basic and higher

education, greater health and safety risks, and less political representation” (“Global Issues:

Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment). This shows that if we keep taking opportunities

away from others, limiting what people could do, it could end worse than it already has. Women

are given the mindset that they are fitted to be housewives. We should teach everyone to follow

their dreams, doesn’t matter who you are. If we want to say that we are all equal, then we

should live up to that.

Some people might say that we are already equal, or people are just exaggerating on

these issues. If we are equal, why are people still fighting for their rights? Why do people feel

the need to speak out because they aren’t being treated equally as others? To build a thriving

Mars community, we need to end sexism because people see themselves as superior to one

another, people are getting paid less than the other gender, and having fewer opportunities. It is

tiring trying to fight for something that we shouldn’t even be fighting for in the beginning. We

have the chance at a fresh start, why not make the best of it?
