Beginner Assignment
• Get comfortable hearing the different odd phrases in 8th notes with the following
stickings: 5 = RLRLL, 7 = RLRLRLL, 9 = RLRLRLRLL;
• Play the odd note 8th note patterns with the accented notes played around the
toms;
• Be able to play the basic linear 4 and 8 on the snare and bass drum and the basic
groove patterns;
• Work on getting comfortable with one or two of the linear 8 elements.
Intermediate Assignment
• Practice and get comfortable with each of the odd note phrases and stickings on
the snare drum;
• Get comfortable with all linear 4 and 8 exercises;
• Get comfortable with all the variables of each pattern (open hi-hats, doubles,
etc.);
• Get comfortable with the linear phrases outlined in this lesson.
Advanced Assignment
• Play the full figures of the odd note phrase and be able to orchestrate them
around the kit;
• Be able to play the same odd note phrases in 4/4 time and work on resolving the
patterns;
• Get comfortable with all the linear exercises, time feels and variables outlined in
this lesson;
• Be able to play each of the phrases at 120 BPM;
• Create 4 different 2 bar patterns of your own.
