Impact of Managerial Communication Course in Professional & Personal Life

Introduction:
As a MBA student, the business communication course is essential for me as it will provide
me with the opportunities of unlearning the lessons I learned about communication and
relearning about effective communication skills that will be resourceful in my career. The
learning from this course till now is not only limited to building and improving communication
skills, but it has also provided an insightful guidance to excelling in professional life and
building strong personal values for personal growth. In order to become good learners,
students need to prepare themselves for the learning process and unlearn unnecessary and
even wrong things that they have learned previously. The course gave me an insight into the
importance of preparing myself for the learning process through becoming a pro-active and
self-motivated learner. The universally applicable Zen proverb of “When the learner is ready
the trainer starts”- has driven me to become more self-reliant which will enhance my
knowledge by utilizing the study materials provided throughout the course.

Impact on Personal Life:

My most crucial learning from the course is regarding the importance of talent in achieving
professional success. According to my previous experiences and real-life observations, I
believed that talent plays a key role in making or breaking anyone’s career, but through this
course, I learned that a person can also garner success in his professional career even
without having any significant talent. Maintain basic things such as punctuality, passion,
good work ethics, discipline, and positivity in attitude, broad mindedness, and even body
language can help an ordinary person with basic skills become an extraordinary
professional. The importance of taking risks and becoming hyper-ambition is also
emphasized in this course. I have learned the importance of becoming ambitious and
working hard for becoming a financially successful person to benefit myself, my family and
create opportunities for others through this process. The burning question that has always
been in my mind is whether the societal norms are doing any good to us or harming us in a
big way. I got the perfect answer through this course which provides importance on
questioning the social values, norms, and ethics especially questioning those social myths
that hinder hyper-growth and success. Although the usage of communication is not limited to
the corporate world only, its importance in the business sector creates a special value for the
employee, managers, and the top management in achieving organizational goals.

Impact on Professional Life:

Business communication is one of the integral parts of the work of business. Due to the
importance of business communication in the execution of business activities, organizations
tend to focus more on recruiting candidates with good communication skills, and also
training their existing employees in improving communication skills. Basic structure of
workplace communication is introduced through this course in different way. Emphasizing on
understanding the context of the message and understanding the effect of diverse opinions
on communication are also among the key learning from this course. Earlier I was familiar
with the four mode of communication which are reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Through this course, I was introduced with the new mode of communication which includes
thinking, listening, and speaking. Moreover, the focus is also on non-verbal communication
and understanding such messages effectively. In addition, the core communication skills that
will help any individual understand the internal environment of a corporation is also reflected
on this course. Importance of being a part of the corporate informal network, influencing top
management through work ethic, and promoting one’s own professional achievements are
the core benefits this course has already provided me. Building strong relationships is the
most valuable thing needed to become successful in professional life. Utilizing
communication skills can create resourceful opportunities for strengthening the existing
relationships and building new relationships. The communication process model is also
represented from the sender’s perspective. In this process, the sender sends his thoughts
through the channel to the receiver. The most notable think to make this process successful
is to ensure that the receiver is properly understanding the intended message and following-
up after sending the message whether the receiver has actually received it. Now the
message can be understood in different ways depending on the age, gender, education,
experience, upbringing, and even religion. Depending on the understandings of the receiver
the feedback of the message can be positive or negative. The concepts of mental filter and
noise are also introduced in this course and how we can build efficiency in the
communication procedure so that core purpose of building the communication is achieved.
Analyzing the audience, understanding the mental filters of the audience, simplicity in
messages, avoiding stereotyping and primitive discrimination can increase the efficiency of
the communication. An effective message should be clear, complete, correct, and concise
and should be able to build goodwill. Few phrases that were frequently used in e-mail
communication as a result of colonialism were also corrected through this course which has
helped me improve my formal e-mail writing skills. On the other hand, it has also been
understood through this course that e-mails should neither be formal nor informal; in fact e-
mails should be conversational.

Conclusion:

The impact of strong communication skills have become inevitable for me through the
learning process of this course as it has provide with ample evidence how building strong
communication skills can impact my professional life and help me in building sustainable and
resourceful professional relationships with key people. Moreover, the core learning from the
course which focused on nurturing skills that can be built regardless of talent, has benefitted
me the most as it has further encouraged me becoming hyper-ambitious, goal-driven, hard
worker, and resilient. Hence, the learning from this course were not limited to aspects of
business communication only, it reflected on realistic scenarios that will help a student in
building a successful professional life and an inspirational personal life.
