Adult Beginners Piano - The Correct Way To Practise

Piano Scales To Avoid Wasting Your Time
By Samantha Griffiths | Submitted On February 23, 2011

When you learn piano one of the most important things you will learn are scales. These are very important and teach you
the correct technique on the piano.

Piano scales come in a wide variety of arrangements, including ascending major and minor scales, arpeggios, chromatic
scales, broken chords and contrary motion scales which are great for a beginner and sound really cool!

Practising piano scales is an important part of playing piano and even professionals who have been playing for many
years are likely to warm up with some kind of a scale pattern in order to get the fingers moving correctly, a little like a
singer does before a performance. It also warms up the muscles in the fingers and hands so it is vital to warm up before
playing for a long period of time. Believe it or not, you can actually injure your fingers if they are not correctly warmed
up by playing a few scales due to strain.

Scales aren't only good for warming your hands up though, they have endless amounts of benefits, and a pianist who has
had training which includes scales will always have a better technique than somebody who has taught themselves or
plays by ear. This doesn't mean they are bad musicians it just means they will probably not always use the easiest form of
fingering and coordination.

Scales connect through songs more than you would think. Broken chords and arpeggios are often frequent in the bass
notes of songs, so if you have learnt lots of these, when you go to learn a new song and it has this pattern in the song you
will find it much easier to learn to play and be comfortable with the correct fingering.

Piano scales also help you learn about different key signatures and you will learn to recognise which black notes are in
each key, so again when you pick up a new piece of music you want to learn, for example if it is in the key of Bb Major,
you will instantly recognise that it has two Black notes being Bb and Eb.

For a beginner, when learning scales, it not only teaches you correct fingering positions on the keys, but it also teaches
you how to have your fingers positioned on the piano, and also helps you build on your coordination of hands together.

So after reading this, get learning some scales if you are not doing so already!
