Professional Experience Rationale

On the 15th of June 2020, I will begin my professional practice in Al-Faisal College, Auburn for 10
days. I am informed beforehand that I will be observing science classes, assisting students in
groups of 2-3 maximum and will be marking student’s workbooks. In this educational setting, I
expect to learn different types of teaching strategies from the teacher and the different ways in
which they manage a classroom full of students. Since I have been to school in Australia, I
already have an idea of how the classrooms operate and therefore, I would hope to learn about
how the staffrooms operate instead. I would also like to learn how the teachers create the
examinations for students and how they mark the papers on time after the students have
completed them. I hope my supervisor teaches me what to look for when marking students
workbooks and give me the chance to mark books myself in order to gain further skill and grow
from there. The knowledge I already have to get me started in my PPCE is that I know how the
high school system works such as students having to move from one class to another and I have
the experience of teaching students and managing small classes as I have tutored in a few
centers in the past. I would like to gain more knowledge and experience than I already have and
understand how things work behind the scenes (in the staffroom). The goals I hope to achieve
are gaining confidence in communicating with students and understanding where their level of
learning is at. This is important as it will allow me to target on the weaknesses of my students in
the future and be able to help them strengthen these weaknesses. This would allow the
opportunity for all students to succeed and is beneficial in allowing the lower ability students to
show an improvement in their work. I also intend to learn how to handle science practical’s as a
teacher and to see what positive and negative things could happen during the practical. Finally,
I would be glad to be given an opportunity toward the end of my professional experience to
have five minutes in the beginning of the lesson to see if I could put my classroom management
skills into practice with a bigger class. Entering the professional experience, I think my
supervisor will be pleased with the skills I already have more managing a classroom and for
teaching students in a way that would cater for all learning styles. I would be able to advise
them for the things I already know and can help provide them with extra ideas that they may
need such as with the classroom arrangement, with the content, marking, and so on. If
everything goes as I expect, I strongly believe that this experience will allow me to grow as a
teacher and become more optimistic about running a science classroom on my own.
