Parland cement fs ight gray, off white or white powder that poses lite immedite hazard. It isnot combustible or explosive ‘Acingle short-term exposure fo he dry powder not tely to cause serous harm. However, exposure of euficient duration to weet potand cement can cause serous, potential meversbie seve (ekin or eye) destruction n the form of chemical (east) burns, ‘The same type of bssue destruction can oocur i wel of most area ofthe body are exposed for sufiient duration to dry potland cement. Porland cement contains Wace amguns of hexavalent chromium which has an OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) (8-hour time weighted average) of 5 pg/m’, an OSHA Action Level of 2.5 igi’, and an ACGIH TLV of 10 g/m’. Potential Health Effects + Relevant Routes of Exposure: Eye contac, skin contac, inhalation, and ingestion + Effects resulting from ey e contact: Exposure to atorne dust may cause Immediate or delayed ination oF inflammation. Eye contact wih larger amounts of dry powder or splashes of wel Portand carent may cause eflecs ranging from moderate eye ination to chemical burns and bindness. Such exposures require immediate frat aid (e0e section IV) and medical atention to Prevent signieant damage tothe eye. + fects resulting fom skin contact: Discomfort or pein cannot be reled upon to alert a person to a hazardous skin exposure Consequently, the only effecive means of avolting skin inury of less involves minmizing skin contact, pateualy contact wth ‘wet coment. Exposed persons may nt fel disconton unt hrs afer the exposure has ended and significant injury has occed Expose to dry Portland cement may cause drying ofthe skin with consequent mi rtaion or more significant effects atrbutabie to aggravation of other condone, Itant dermatiis may be caused by the physleal properies of cement including aka and Abrasion. Dry potland cement contacting wet skin or exposure to mols of wet pottand cement may cause more severe skin fetes ncuding thickening, eracking or fssuring ofthe skh. Prolonged exposure can cause severe skin damage inthe form of (caustic) chereal bums. Some Inchiduais may exhibt an allege response upen exposure to porland cement, possibly de to {race amounts of comium. ‘The response may appear in @ variety of forms ranging fom « mid rash to severe skin ulcers, Persons already sensitized may react to the fst contact wih te product. Other persons may experience this effect ater years of contact wth portand cement products, + Eifects resutng rom inhalavon: Portland cement may contain vace amoun's of fee cvstaline slice. Prolonged exposure to resprable fee crstaine silea can aggravate olher ung condiions and cause slicosis, a deablng and potertaly fatal lung Gsease andlor other dueases,_ Risk of jury or csease depends on duralon and degree of exposure, (Also see “Carcinogenie polenta’ below.) Some studies have shown thal exposure to respirable crystaline slica (without slicosi) ofthat the disease Silicosis may be associated with the increased incdence of several autoimmune disorders ach es scleroderma (thickening ofthe skin), systemic lupus, enthematosus, yheumatod aris and deases affecing the Kidneys, slicosis creases the risk of {uberoulosis and some studies have shown an increased incidence of chronic Kidney disease and and-elage renal disease In Workers exposed to respirable crystaline sllca, Exposure lo Poland cement may cause iain fo te moist mucous membranes ofthe nose, threat, and upper respiratory system, K may also leave unpleasant Geposts in the nose + Btfets resulting from ingestion: Ahough small quanttes of dust ae not known to be harmful effects are possible it targer uanties are consumed. Immediately fush eyes thoroughly with water. Continue flushing eye for atleast 15 minutes, including under li particles. Call physician immediatly, ‘Skin: Wash skin with cool water and pH-neutral soap ora mild detergent. Seek medical treatment in all cases of prolonged exposure to wet coment, wet cement mixtures, wet concrete liquids from fresh cement produc, or prolonged wet skin exposure to dry coment Inhalation of Airbome Dust: Remove to fresh air. Seek medical help f coughing or other symptoms do nat subside. (Inhalation of gross ‘amounts of portland cement requires immediate mecical attention) Ingestion- Do not induce vomiting. Avoid Inhalation of cust and contact with skin Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as described in Section Vil Scrape up net meteral and place in an appropriate container. Aw the material o "dry" before disposel. Do not attempt to wash portland cement down drains. Dispose of waste material according to focal, state, and federal regulations. Section Vil - Handling & Storage Keep portiand cement dry until used, Normal temperatures and pressures do not affect the material. Prompily remove dusty clothing or clothing which Is wet with cement ids and launder before reuse, Wash thoroughly after exposure fo dust or wet cement mixtures oF fulds, Section VIII - Exposure Control/Personal Protection ‘Skin Protection: Prevention fs essential to avoiding potertialy severe skin inury, Avoid contact with unhardened wet portland cement products. If contact occurs, prompily wash affected area with soap and water. Where prolonged exposure to unhardened portland ‘cement products might occur, wear impervious clothing and gloves to prevent skin contact. Where required, wear sturdy boots that are Impervious to water to eliminate foot and ankle exposure. Do not rely on barrier creams; barrier creams should not be used in place of gloves. Periodically wash areas contacted by dry portland cement or wet cement or concrete with @ pH neutral soap. Wash again at the end of the work. Ifinttalion occurs, immediately wash the affected area and seek treatment. If clothing becomes saturated with wet conerete it should be removed and replaced with clean, dry clothing Respiratory protection: Avoid actions that cause dust fo become alrbomme. Use local or general ventlation to control exposures below applicable exposure limiis, Use NIOSH/MSHA-approved (under 30 CFR 11) or NIOSH-approved (under 42 CFR 84) respirators in poorly ventilated areas, if an applicable exposure limit is exceeded, or when dust causes discomfort or intation. (Advisory: Respirators fd fitere purchased ater July 10, 1998, must be cerliied under 42 CFR 64,) Respirators should be used in accordance with the OSHA Rospiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134, Ventilation: Use local exhaust or general dilution ventilation to control exposure within applicable limits. Eye Protection: In conditions where user may be expased to splashes or putts of cement, wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles that meet the ANSI 287.1 standard. In extremely dusty or unpredictable environments, wear unvented or indirectly vented goggles to avoid eye iitation oF injury. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with portiand cement or fresh cement products. Section IX - Physical & Chemical Properties Appearance!
