Types of bolts covered in this speci- fication are: LLL Type Bolts made of medium-carbon stel. 11.2 Type 2—Bolts made from what is generally described 1s low-carbon martensite steel. 141.3 Type 3—Bolts made of steel having atmotpheric ‘corrosion resistance and weathering characteristics comparable {o that of the steel covered in Specifications A SB8/A 588M, A2A2A. A 242M, snd A.70WA.709M. The atmospheric cor rosion resistance ofthese steels is substantially better than that ‘of earbon tel with or without copper addition (see 5.3). Whea properly to the atmosphere, these steels can be used bare (ancosted) for many applications. 112 This specification provides that heavy hex structural bolts shall be furnished unless other dimensional requirements ‘re stipulated inthe porchase inquiry and order. 1.3 Unless otherwise specified, all nuts used on these bolts shall conform t0 the requirements of Specification A S63M ‘hall be heavy hex, and shall be of the clas and surface finish for each type of bolt as follows: Bot Tpe and Fran ut in ana 1 are, (porcoteg) 8.0889, pal “Tend secon 10, erated “This spceton enter the Jonicion of ASTM. These Inspections, when performed to resolve disputes, shall be performed at the frequency and acceptability spcifed in Table 1 8, Workmanship 8.1. Surface discontinuity limits shall be in accordance with Specification F 788/F 785M, 9. Test Methods 9.1. Tetts shal be conducted in accordance with Test Methe ods F606. 9.2 ‘The zinc-coated bolt shall be placed in a stcel joint and assembled with a zinc-costed washer and a zinc-coated mut. ‘The joint shall be one or more flat structural stel plates with ‘a total thickness, including the washer, such that three to five {all threads ofthe bolt are located between the bearing surfaces Of the bolt head and nat, The hole in the joint shall have the ‘same nominal diameter as the hole in the washer. The initial tightening of the mut shall produce a load in the bolt not bss than 10 % of the specified proof load (Appendix X1). After this initial tightening, the nut position shall be marked, and this ‘marking shall serve as the base from which the rotation ‘of 62 shall be measured. During not rotation the bolt head shall be restrained from tuning. 10, Quality Asarance of Mechanical Requirements 10.1 The manufacturer shall make sample inspections of every lot of bolts to ensure that properties of boltx are in conformance with the requirements of this specification. All ‘bolts shal be inspection tested prior to shipment in accordance ‘with one ofthe two quality assurance procedures described in 10.2 and 10.3, respectively.
