ENGLISH Joyfully [4 =<.104] yo 3 23 @ This is an arrangement of a well-known song from 18th-century England, to a tune called Country Gardens which was first printed in 1728, (You may notice its resemblance to the version of Country Gardens made popular by Perey Grainger.) The anonymous words are said to be about a real Vicar of Bray in Berkshire, who altered his own practices, and even his beliefs, to sult the religious preferences of successive monarchs from Charles I to George I, and so to keep his job. The melody is modal, that is using a traditional scale other than major or minor: the key signature suggests that itis in D major, but itends on an E. He was a master of writing melodies which seem very simple yet which are memorable and catchy. This waltz, one of several from Gold and Silver, needs to be played fast enough for it to have a one-in-a-bar lilt It isa delight to play on the violin, partly because of the way the bowing works out: on the long tied notes (eg. bb. 5-6) you can travel the whole length ofthe bow and then play the two crotchets alternately atthe tip (b. 6) and at the heel (b. 8). AB 3276Country Chimes oe No. 17 from Let’s Play the Violin cae DAVID STONE Allegretto [4. = .60] A Q David Stone (b. 1922) is a former director of the School of Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, well known for his ‘educational compositions. This piece of his is constructed round a version of the ‘Westminster chimes, said to have been writen by the ‘composer William Crotch (1775-1847). They are best known as the chimes of St Stephen's Tower at the Palace of Westminster (usually called Big, Ben, though in fact that is the name of the bel that strikes the hours), but they can also be heard on the clocks of many country churches. AS originally written, the piece alternates between ‘solo’ and tutti —a solo violin and a group of violins ~ with the soloist loud or fairly loud but the ‘group, which plays the chimes, quiet (until the added ending). Her output also includes orchestral and choral pieces, individual instrumental pieces and songs. This piece is from a volume Called Take the Stage, a collection of, mostly, dance tunes ‘with a “showbiz” theme. The tango isa dance which originated in the poorer areas of ‘Buenos Aires in Argentina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and has now become popular all round the world.
