If we define art as something that is created into being, then art will always have function.

Everything that is created always has a purpose and reason for it's creation, as mundane or as
purposive as it may be.

In many cultures, the creation of art images served a religious purpose. Such was the case in the in
Medieval Europe where art served primarily to ornament churches and palaces. Evident in history
is the use of art to educate, to inspire, to entertain and to be used as a means of expression,
among others.

The definition of the function of art should not be limited to as to whether art can be exploited for
human consumption or that art is a means by which something is achieved. Many artists would
argue that art serves no ulterior purposes but is purely an end in itself. Art for art's sake. "L'art
pour l'art"

The New World Encyclopedia defines "Art for art's sake" as the usual English rendition of a French
slogan, "l'art pour l'art'," which was coined early in the nineteenth century by the French
philosopher Victor Cousin and became a bohemian slogan during the nineteenth century.

If the essence of art is based on the utility it has, it would be relative from person to person. One
man's trash is another man's treasure, so they say. However, the proponents of Art for art's sake
would say that art is not something to be used as a means to something else, but simply to be
accepted and enjoyed on its own terms. This is the philosophy that the intrinsic value of art does
not have to serve purposes taken from politics, religion, economics, society and so on. Although
incidentally, art may achieve these other purposes.

To pursue art for the sake of art means the creation of art that is free from didactic, moral, politic,
or utilitarian function. Such works are sometimes described as "autotelic", from the Greek
autoteles, "complete in itself", a concept that has been expanded to embrace "inner-directed" or
"self-motivated" human beings.

When art is created, there is the intention of the artist to create for whatever purpose and pursuit
