9.3. Crane rated capacity calculation for steering articulation
and/or slope
The LMI uses a complex algorithm to calculate the crane rated capacity due to the
configuration of the crane and slope position. The printed rated capacity manual is only a
“snapshot” of what the crane is rated to in the prescribed configuration based on flat level
ground.

To check the LMI against the printed rated capacity manual requires moving the crane
into a position which aligns with the configuration stated on the manual. The table below
gives a range of values which can be expected based on the inputs provided. Note that
values are subject to change.

Table 7 – Crane RC examples

9.7. Counterweight Detection (if fitted)
Cranes with counterweight detection do not require the user to select the counterweight
position, however, it is shown in the duty selection pop-up window. The counterweight
position is also shown graphically on the articulation icon.

The duty selection will pop-up when a new valid configuration is detected and the user is
required to confirm the duty. The LMI will automatical default to no counterweight when
the counterweight is removed. No motion limits are induced in either situation as the duty
is based on the configuration detected. Faults with the detection will induce warnings on
the crane mode screen.

9.8. Crane mode icons and warning messages

There are several status and warning icons and warning messages which may appear
on the Crane Screen depending on system conditions. The display will show multiple
warning messages by alternately cycling through each message (some conditions will
result in multiple warning messages).

Note: The LMI will not allow dangerous crane operation under certain conditions.
Once a warning message has been activated, it will continue to be displayed until the
condition is resolved. In this example below in Figure 27, the crane is moving faster than
the allowable pick-and-carry speed with line-pull exceeded.

Figure 27 – LMI Screen with Fault Messages

• “Gear” icons relate to the transmission and transfer case.

• “Engine” icons relate to engine parameters.
• AMBER icons are EITHER informational and require attention at earliest
convenience, OR show the opposite state of a GREEN icon, ie. the winch

10. Crane controls

10.1. Joystick deadman (if fitted)

Cranes equipped with a joystick include a deadman switch. The deadman switch must
be depressed in order for the joystick to function. If a stuck joystick deadman switch is
detected the stuck deadman icon will be displayed:

If a stuck joystick deadman is detected then the joystick will not operate until the joystick
deadman switch goes through an OFF-ON sequence. NOTE: The stuck deadman icon
may also be caused by a joystick fault.

10.2. Motion limiter functions

There are numerous cases where continued motion in a direction which will lead to a
dangerous situation will be limited. In each instance the system will still allow a motion in
a safe direction whenever possible. Note there may be multiple reasons for a motion limit.

A motion limit will also be induced if the value detected by a sensor is out of range,
including on system startup when the sensors and ECU are not active yet. This can
occur on all sensors. Always ensure the crane is operated within the configuration limits
specified.

10.3. Motion limiter override

In the event that the crane is deadlocked then the operator may use the dash-mounted
override rocker switch. This override feature must only be used once it is established
what the condition is and that it is safe to move in a pre-determined direction. This
override feature will only remain active for 30 seconds. At the end of 30 seconds of
continuous override use the limiter functions will resume. Override will only function
again if the override is “reset” by turning the override rocker switch off, then on again.

Figure 28 – LMI override switch

11. LMI calibration
The system requires calibration of sensors to ensure the accurate operation. This is
provided factory set on new machines, but may need to be done periodically or when
operating conditions change. A check of the calibration can either be performed via this
calibration procedure or via viewing the output on the Crane Mode screen.

To perform a calibration, first press the HOME ket to bring up the Home Screen Menu.

Figure 32 – Selecting Calibration

Select Calibration and input the appropriate password. The Calibration menu will then be
shown. Each sensor can be calibrated individually. The crane serial number can be set
only once, when the system is initially configured.

Figure 33 – Selecting sensor to calibrate

Select the sensor to calibrate, the system will prompt the user with instructions to
complete the process. Boom length values are based on the fallblock duty. Return the
crane to an appropriate configuration after each calibration.

13. Data log download

The 8510 maintains two datalogs internally:

• Operational Log storing run-time parameters to replay crane incidents.
• Design Working Period Log storing Crane use and Winch use data for
calculating life of crane and winch gear per AS2550.1:2011.

The internal Operation Log file is a circular file. As the log memory is used up the oldest
pages are archived on the internal SD Card. Therefore the Operational data log always
maintains the latest data, typically up to a month old but this depends on the use of the
crane.

These datalogs are downloaded independently. The overall data retrieval process is as
follows:

Step 1) Access Data log menu via Home Screen.

Step 2) Insert USB memory stick into USB port on bottom right of LMI Display
Note: USB format must be FAT32.
Step 3) Initiate data log download
Step 4) Transfer USB memory stick to a PC and run the decoder program to
create a text file and open in MS Excel.

14.2. Supply overvoltage protection

The LMI system is immune to fast power supply overvoltage transients, however in the
case of extreme crane power system faults the LMI has an internal protection
mechanism which may cause a power supply fuse to blow. This will happen if the crane
supply exceeds 36 volts for an extended period of time which can happen if the crane
battery is disconnected while being charged (or otherwise heavy load).
The LMI has two power fuses; an inline fuse in the chassis fuse box and also an internal
slow-blow fuse. Generally speaking the chassis fuse will blow before the internal fuse.
Both of these fuses are serviceable items. DO NOT replace fuses with a higher current
rating as this can lead to irreparable damage to the LMI system electronics in the future.
