Aluminium Sections

Introduction
• The aluminum doors and window
frames are made from extruded
aluminium sections.
• The channels and box sections have
flanges and grooves for double glazing
and weather-stripping.
• They are used in both interior a well as
exterior surfaces.
• The glazed doors are commonly
advertised as ‘patio doors’.
• Aluminium is a conductive material
• Heat transmission can be reduced by
separating the ALU profile in 2 parts
using an insulating material to reduce
the thermal transmission.
Aluminium Sections: Profile design
➢ Aluminium sections are obtained/moulded by the process of extrusion

➢ This process crudely resembles squeezing material out of tube.

➢ Taking example of toothpaste and toothpaste tube: the toothpaste is a heated

cylindrical aluminium block – also called billet while its tube is tool used.

➢ The billet is preheated in the furnace and is passed through tool to ring profile

to desired shape.

➢ When profile leaves the tool, it is cooled with water and air, later still soft

profiles are drawn out.

➢ This process removes any additional tension build-up in the aluminium while the

desired and correct profile dimensions are achieved.

➢ Profiles are cut into transportable length of sections

➢ Later they are finally strengthened by heat and cold hardening
