A Crash Course on MBTI

What is MBTI?
MBTI (Myer Briggs Type Indicator) is an instrument commonly used to classify
people by 16 main personality types. It was created by the fabulous mother
daughter duo of Katherine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Meyers. They based a lot of
their work on that of psychologist Carl Jung and devised a system to classify “all
people”.

How does it work?

MBTI uses 4 pairs of characteristics to determine the types. Each person chooses
only one of the traits from the pairs so if you do the math that’s 2C1 (4) = 16 types.

The pairs are as follows:

Extroverted/Introverted
Sensing/Intuitive
Feeling/Thinking
Perceiving/Judging

So lets say I choose Extroverted, Sensing, Feeling, and Perceiving. That would make
me an ESFP.

What do these characteristics mean?

Extroverted: Gains energy from being around other people.
Introverted: Gains energy from spending time alone.

Sensing: Focuses on concrete facts and what you can ascertain from the five senses.
Prefers the tried and true method.
Intuitive: Focuses on the big picture and relating things to each other. Prefers to
think about future possibilities and try new ways to do things.

Feeling: Makes decisions based on feelings, values and empathy for others.
Thinking: Makes decisions based on emotionally detached logical analysis.

Perceiving: Prefers to “go with the flow” and keep options open.
Judging: Prefers things to be planned and decided.

How can I find out my type?

Take one of these tests or my abbreviated questionnaire.

Or you can take my questionnaire, which is way better and shorter 

Warning: You need to be completely honest with the tests otherwise your results
will be off. There really isn’t any use in a type that isn’t you so PLEASE be honest
when you’re taking the test.

Which types are the best?

All types are created equal. No really, there is no “best type”. Sure some are more
suited to some tasks than others but there certainly is no “best”.

Is it as simple as that?
NO! There are a lot more factors that go into deciding what type you are. For
example each type has a different order of functions.

The functions are as follows:

Ti or Introverted Thinking
Te or Extroverted Thinking
Fi or Introverted Feeling
Fe of Extroverted Feeling
Ni or Introverted Intuition
Ne or Extroverted Intuition
Si or Introverted Sensing
Se or Extroverted Sensing

The order of functions for each type is different and affects the way that they think
and behave significantly. If you feel like you’re in between types then you should
determine your top two functions and then check which type has those functions
listed as their top two.
