ESSAY Period 3

Oh great. Your mom tells you to wash the dishes, but did you ever think that washing dishes

could really relate to science? WHAT?! Really? Yes I know! Exciting! If you didn’t know already there are

atoms everywhere, even in that nasty leftover broccoli stuck to your plate. The process of washing

dishes can be described into subtopics in terms of atoms. Atoms change in the process of presoak,

scrubbing the dishes with a brush(to remove stuck food), preparing the soap and hot water, washing the

dishes in hot soapy water, rinsing the dishes, draining the dishes while you get out a towel, and lastly

towel drying of the dishes.

The presoak is rinsing and soaking the dishes. Water molecules are falling down onto the plate.

The disgusting food on your plate is becoming less adhesive from the water. The hot water is breaking

up the cohesive and adhesive bonds of the food. The next step is to scrub the food off the dishes with a

brush. The Law of Conservation of Energy implies that you have to supple a force to separate atoms. In

this case the force is the scrub, and it is separating the food from the plate. Thirdly, you prepare the

soap and hot water for washing. Hot steaming water pours out of the faucet. The increasing

temperature of the atoms makes the atoms move faster and increase the amount of empty space. Also

you’re going to put soap and water together to make a mixture. Soap is soluble so this process is able to

happen.

Now your next mind blowing step is to finally wash the dishes in hot soapy water!!! Scrub!

Scrub! Scrub! Your brush is now moving back and forth on the dishes. This similar process is like step

two, scrubbing the dishes also to remove stuck on food but with hot water. Again, the atoms in the food

are losing there adhesion from the plate and separating from the plate, the force coming from the scrub.

Afterwards, you rinse the dishes. More hot water descends onto the plates. The soapy water is losing

its stickiness to the plate because an outside force has ambushed in. This outside force is the hot water

flooding down.

Next, we drain the dishes. The dishes are put onto a rack where the water will now drip down.

Furthermore, the Law of Conservation of Energy implies that you have to have a force to separate

atoms. Gravity is a force, and yes it will separate the water molecules from the plates. The atoms will

fall down. Lastly, you whip out your handy dish wiper towel with grace, and start drying those dishes.

The towel atoms are absorbing the water molecules and are also causing friction.

In conclusion, atoms change when you rinse, wash, and dry the dishes. I have learned that

atoms are separated from outside forces; this is called the Law of Conservation of Energy. Also that

cohesion and adhesion are changed from heating or cooling. There are other processes to like to stretch

or compress and slide anther kind of atom between the atoms of the substance. Atoms change

everyday due to many varying forces. Some can be only small changes or some can be large significant

changes that can affect the world.
