INTRODUCTION TO ECOTOXICOLOGY

Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Bintal Amin, MSc

Code of Conduct

 Students and Lecturer should joint the lecture media (zoom)

on time. Tolerance is only given 10 minutes (Unless there is
advance notice)

 Wearing polite dresses

 Camera on in appropriate room

 If caught not in the media, will be considered as not present

Marking System

The results of the teaching and learning process of students for one semester for this course are obtained
from the results of the evaluation conducted as follows:
1. The quiz is done every 4 lectures : 20%
2. Midterm Exam : 25%
3. Final semester Exam : 30%
4. Structured Assignments : 10%
5. Individual assignments : 15%
Total : 100%

The final grades in this course are stated in letters as follows:

A: quality score 4.00 A-: quality score 3.75 B +: quality score 3.50
B: 3.00 quality score B-: quality score 2.75 C +: quality score 2.50
C: 2.00 quality score C-: 1.75 quality score D +: 1.50 quality score
D: quality score 1.00 E: quality score 0 (does not pass)
Background

 Human activities are adding chemicals into

the environment (water, air and land)
 Activities:
 Agriculture
 Industry
 Use of household chemicals
 What are the impacts?
Course Name : Environmental Ecotoxicology
Course Code : PIK 312
Number of Credit : 3 (2 - 1)
Number of Meetings : 16 x 100 minutes = 1,600 minutes = 26 hours 40 minutes.

Purpose:
General: After students study this course, they are able to put forward environmental pollution theories
as a result of human activity and their effects on biota and the environment.
Specific:
1. Students are able to explain the notion of ecotoxicology, sources of pollutants, predict the nature of
pollutants in the environment and models in ecosystems.
2. Students are able to explain several aspects of toxicology.
3. Students are able to understand the behavior of poisons, toxicity and lethal and sub-lethal effects,
double toxicity and detoxification of toxic materials.
4. Students are able to explain the effect of physical and chemical changes in the environment and their
effects on biota.
5. Students are able to express methods in researching ecosystem responses qualitatively and
quantitatively.
6. Students are able to express the types and fate of pollutants in the ecosystem.
7. Students are able to explain several pathways for the entry of pollutant material into the ecosystem.
8. Students are able to explain the long-distance movement of pollutant material in the ecosystem.
9. Students are able to explain the nature and fate of metals and radioactivity in contaminated ecosystems
that involve issues of bioavailability, persistence in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
10. Students are able to explain the fate of pollutants and the processes that occur in individual organisms.
11. Students are able to distinguish organic pollutants in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
12. Students can explain the general principles of toxicity testing and the use of various test organisms.
13. Students can explain biochemical responses to organisms, mechanisms of toxicity at the molecular
level and for example.
14. Students can explain the effects of pollutant material at the cellular, organ and organism level.
15. Students can explain the toxins that affect target organs in living things and their effects.
16. Students can explain the data needed for chemical evaluation, extrapolation of toxicity data, safety
factors and risk assessments.

– The term ‘ecotoxicology’ appeared in the
literature in 1969 by Truhaut, when
chemicals were being widely used.
– First introduced by Dubois dan Tailing
(1959).
– In 1962 ecotoxicology research were
limited only on humans.

Toxicology
 Branch of science that deals with the
adverse effects of chemicals on living
systems.

 “All substances are poisons; there is

none that is not a poison. The right
dose differentiates a poison and a
remedy.”
 Paracelsus (1493-1541)

Bintal Amin
 Environmental Toxicology

 Duffus (1980): the study of the effects of toxic

substances occurring in both natural and man-made
environments

 Landis and Yu (1995): the study of the impacts of

pollutants upon the structure and function of
ecological systems (from molecular to ecosystem)

Bintal Amin
Ecotoxicology

 Truhaut (1977): the branch of toxicology concerned with

the study of toxic effects, caused by natural and synthetic
pollutants, to the constituents of ecosystems, animals
(including human), vegetable and microbial, in an
integrated context
 Moriarty (1983): the natural extension from toxicology, the
science of poisons on individual organisms, to the ecological
effects of pollutants
 Levin et al. (1989): the science that seeks to predict the
impacts of chemicals upon ecosystems

Bintal Amin
 Cairns and Mount (1990): the study of the fate and effect of
toxic agents in ecosystems
 Jorgensen (1990): the science of toxic substances in the
environment and their impact on living organisms
 Suter (1993): the study of toxic effects on nonhuman organisms,
populations, and communities
 Shane (1994): the study of the fate and effect of a toxic
compound on an ecosystem
 Forbes and Forbes (1994): the field of study which integrates
the ecological and toxicological effects of chemical pollutants on
populations, communities, and ecosystems with the fate
(transport, transformation, and breakdown) of such pollutants
in the environment
 Hoffman et al. (1995): the science of predicting effects of
potentially toxic agents on natural ecosystems and non-target
species Bintal Amin
Ecotoxicology

The branch of Environmental Toxicology

concerned with the study of toxic effects,
caused by stable chemical stressors
(natural and synthetic) on the biosphere
and constituents of the biosphere

Bintal Amin
 Ecotoxicology as a tool is based on a four-
part process
The release of a chemical into the
environment;
The transport of the chemical into biota, with
or without chemical transformation;
The exposure of the chemical to one or more
target organisms and
The response of biosphere and constituents of
the biosphere to the chemical exposure
Bintal Amin
Definition: Classical Toxicology

 Classical Toxicology covers the

uptake, distribution, metabolism and
excretion of chemicals by individual
organisms

Bintal Amin
 It focuses on two base themes:

Testing of new pharmaceutical products

The identification of potentially harmful

effects from the new natural and
synthetic compounds

Bintal Amin
Ecotoxicology

 Hence the broader goal of Ecotoxicology is

preserving the structure and functioning
(physiology) of biosphere and not the
protection of individual organism or a
specific population.
