Exercise 6. A PROLIFERATION OF COMPUTERS

Part I. Essay. Write your answer in the space provided. Your answer must be based on your
interpretation of what you read in this module. (10 pts. Each)
1. What factors underlie the trend toward networks of personal computers (clients) connected to file
servers?
The factors underlie the trend toward networks of personal computers (clients) connected to file
servers is the network operating system provides tools to share server resources and information with
network users. A sophisticated permissions-handling system is included, so that access to sensitive
information can be carefully tailored to the needs of the users. The evolution of client-server
technologies has been an important factor in the expansion of information technology across an
increasing range of application business processes

2. What is the advantage of a workstation over a larger computer?

The advantage of a workstation over a larger computer is workstation have more powerful
graphics processing unit and comes with more cores per CPU compare to larger computer. A computer
has the power to accomplish tasks such as word processing, email and web surfing but a workstation has
more power because it can handle animation, data analysis, CAD, as well as video and audio editing.

3. What are the features of mainframe computers?

Mainframes have higher capacity of processing levels to handle huge amount of data. These
computers have high storage capacity because they process large volume of data and they have the
capability of storing the data. Mainframe systems can run multiple operating systems at a time and thus
we can say it is not a single computer.

4. What features should a high-end server have?

High end servers is designed specifically for multiple computers to connect to and access
resources. They are built with higher-grade components than typical PCs, which means they are more
reliable. Servers allow multiple CPUs, tons of RAM slots and more storage with higher throughput than
a traditional PC.

5. What are the main characteristics of the client-server model?

A client server model is a distributed application framework that partition tasks or workloads
between the providers of a service. When a client requests a connection to a server, the server can either
accept or reject the connection. If the connection is accepted, the server establishes and maintains a
connection with client over a specific protocol.
