Pavanne and Galliard- Reflection

Advanced Higher Music

Hollie Moore

My composition Pavanne and Galliard was written for four recorders. It consists of a slow
Pavanne in 2 time and a faster Galliard in 3 time.
I used the Dorian Mode to write the piece. Each eight bar phrase finishes with an imperfect
cadence (I - V) except at the end of the piece which finishes with a perfect cadence.
Each part, soprano, alto and tenor take turns to play the melody.
The melody includes passing notes and sequences. It also includes ornamentation typical
of the music of the period; trills and mordants.
As each part enters, compositional techniques such as imitation, contrary motion,
movement in thirds are used. The soprano recorder often adds a descant above the main
tune (bar 36-41)
The Galliard begins in the form of a canon with each part entering with the theme.
In bar 25 and 58 the recorders play the melody in unison as the theme is played for the
final time. The piece end with a perfect cadence. (V-I)
