Electronic Lab and Equipment Safety

 Importance of safety in engineering and education

 Conduct yourself responsibly in the lab at all times, no horse play or pranks are allowed
 NO food or drinks allowed in the lab
 Don’t work alone in the lab
 Keep your work area clean, clean up when done and don’t create trip hazards
 Don’t unplug the workstation Ethernet Cable, use the spare jack or Wi-Fi if needed
 Electrical Safety
 Shock hazard isn’t a problem until the voltage exceeds 50V, however:
 IC’s, capacitors and batteries can explode therefore where safety glasses
when working with exposed circuits
 Equipment and circuits can be damaged if connected incorrectly
 Emergency power shutoff (E-Stop)
 Static
 Can hurt but it won’t harm you
 Can damage electronic circuits, risks are reduced by:
o Building humidity is controlled
o The floor is static dissipative and is grounded
o Grounding wire on benches
o Can hand out antistatic bracelets if required
 Equipment:
 Don’t operate equipment without permission or without training
 Lockers with equipment are assigned to groups who are responsible for returning
before the end of the semester. Don’t attempt to open other lockers. If you have a
trouble to open your locker, please see the lab technologist or GTAs
 Where long sleeves and safety glasses when soldering
 Electronic Security:
 Cameras, for incident review
 Equipment, for theft protection
 Lab access, for lab and personal protection
 Afterhours access is given to those who need it
 Don’t wedge the lab door open
 Don’t share your student card
 Fire Safety
 Learn the fire exit for the lab
 Learn where the fire extinguishers are
 Learn where the nearest fire pull station is
 Notify the GTA or Lab Technologist of any unsafe conditions
 There are Emergency Phones with Blue lights in the hall with a direct line to the police
