Dual coding Theory is all about the formation of mental images aids learning.

To me that means

dual coding is when something, regardless of what it is, helps you learn with two different types

of learning. Dual coding theory and multimedia theory allows students to link the textual learning

with visual learning and vice versa. When students form this mental link between what the text

means and the picture the students will understand the concept deeper. For example, the

instructional material I choose to redesign is all about the percentages of Earth’s water that is

fresh water and can be available for human consumption. How I redesigned it was I took out all

the slides with big wordy slides and replaced them with visuals that express the same message,

allows students to focus on the flow of what the picture is trying to convey, and focuses their

eyes on the main points. Using dual coding theory and multimedia theories, these images will

allow students to not only take a mental picture, but also quickly pull out the meaning of what it

is really saying. Using dual coding theory and multimedia theory students will be able to see the

visual images in their head and mentally see that while there is only 3% of freshwater on Earth,

of that 3% 79% of all freshwater is frozen in glaciers and icecaps. When students focus on the

image they will be able to link the real message to the image they see. Having students store

the learning using both text and the images will increase the chances of learning being retained

much greater.
