The narrator wakes up in a hotel room and is unable to fall back asleep due to sunlight and noise from a nearby cafe. They get dressed and leave town to visit an old friend in Bursa. On the way back, they miss their bus and decide to stay in the small town of Orhangazi. They set out to visit Lake Iznik but get lost among reeds and marshes along the way. The beach they eventually reach provides no magnificent views, just sand, pebbles and a surface rippling with the wind. The only notable fact is that the lake water is salt-free.

Spring Semester IMT204 Literary Text Translation II Midterm 21956019 Mehmet Özgü Aras Task: Translate this page into English I rolled in the bed’s corner to hide my eyes from the sunlight. Useless! After a few minutes, a bright light found me where I was, and a sticky sweat was drowning my face and neck. Meanwhile, the gramophone of the cafe under the hotel where I slept broke my last will to keep sleeping. A singer with a hoarse voice cries out: “Put an eyeliner on your eyes, Put a henna on your toes!” I got up, got dressed and laughed for the idleness that kept me in this small town. I went out to see an old friend in Bursa and talk about subjects other than literature for a while. I settled in a very comfortable truck in Yalova and after a lot of dangerous and beautiful curvy bend I came to Orhangazi -famously known as Pazarköy-. Iznik Lake that I saw from afar while I was going down to this small town, attracted me with a strange charm. Without any reason I missed the bus and stayed here. This was an important so-called heroism in my life, which is always based on certain rules and logic. However, the comfort and pride of getting rid of being slave of fine calculations and doing whatever my mind’s desire did not last long. I started to get bored on the way to Lake Iznik, which I already was out of its way. As I approached the lake, I was lost among the reeds and marshes, bewildering the way. The beach that I reached under harsh conditions did not give me a magnificent vista either. Like every great waterfront; some sand, some pebbles and a meaningless surface that flutters with the strength of the wind! The only news was knowing that this water was salt-free. I hurried back to town, fearing to lose the way again.
