THE 1956 ARROW

VOLUME XIII

Published by The Senior Class

Tiskilwa High School

DEDICATION
The Senior Class proudly dedi-
cates this 1956 Arrow to our hard-
working secretary, Mrs. Alice
McCauley, for her unselfish de-
votion to the student body, faculty,
and guests of our school.
With her unfailing patience,
efficiency, and cheerful smile, she
has helped everyone to go on his
way with a lift to his spirits.

2
I shot an arrow into the air, I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, l knew not where; It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight For who has sight so keen and strong,
Could not follow it in its flight. That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak

I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.
--Longfellow.

CLASS HISTORY
Thirty -nine " green freshmen " started to school on one
September day in 1952. Officers elected to lead us through
our first year were: Tom Syler, Pres.; Helen Fandel, Vice
Pres.; Nancy Hannon, Sec.; and Dona Wright, Treas. Our
class sponsor was Mr. Pruitt. During this first year, Dennis
Keleher, Rosemary Swearingen, Kenneth Nordstrom, and
Mary Lou Lutes transferred to different schools, leaving a
class enrollment of 35 at the end of the year.
When we returned to school as sophomores, we found
that Bill Morris, Betty Arteberry, and Robert Stout were no
longer with us. However, Betty Jo Laurentzen and Kathy
Busker had joined our class. Class officers for this year
were: John Brokaw, Pres.; Sheldon Nordstrom, Vice Pres.;
Nancy Hannon, Sec.; and Dona Wright, Treas. Our class
sponsors were Mr. Keithley and Miss Jackson. During the
year, Bessie Jay transferred to Decatur and Dick Brown
joined us. We ended the year with 34 members.
We started our junior year without Helen Fandel, Nancy
Hannon, and Tom Syler. Rosie Smith joined us to make our
class enrollment 32. Officers elected to lead us through
this year were: John Brokaw, Pres.; Don Sash, Vice Pres.;
Janice Stalter, Sec.; and Dona Wright, Treas.
During the year, Betty J o Laurentzen and Dick Brown
transferred to Princeton and Paul Strunk quit school, leaving
our class membership at 30.
We gave our first class play, "That's Our Boy," which
proved to be a big hit and lots of fun. The Prom, which we
gave the Seniors of 1955, was also a big success. The theme,
"Moonlight and Roses," was carried out very attractively.
Class sponsors this year were Miss Jackson and Mr. Jacob-
son.
When we started our senior year we found two of our
classmates missing--Ted Joiner andKathy Busker. Kenneth
Hopper joined us the second semester and Eleanor Philhower
was with us for two weeks. Nancy Anderson dropped from
school during the middle of the year, leaving our class
membership at twenty-seven. Class officers for this year
are: John Brokaw, Pres.; Don Sash, Vice Pres.; Judy Pear-
son, Sec.; and Janice Stalter, Treas. Our sponsors are Mr.
Denler and Mr. Orcutt.
We gave our Senior Class Play, "Father Was a House-
wife," which was enjoyed by everyone. In the spring, the
juniors gave us a wonderful Prom.
Senior Class Night, Baccalaureate, and Commencement
are over and now we are ready to go out into the world to
start life for ourselves.

PROPHECY, ''TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW''
The class of "56" we were.
A mighty good old class, yes sir.
Our motto was, "Not Finished, Just Begun,"
And to this day we're yet not done.
Our ventures nave carried us far and wide.
With some we've laughed, with some we've cried.
To you I reveal everyone's career;
Do listen quietly and you shall hear.
One of our classmates is Beverly B.
Her job is to leave women shining with glee.
In twenty years she's steamed off quite a few tons,
Because a Ladies Reducing Salon she now runs.
Remember "Baldy" Ward our old class clown.
Well he now runs a barber shop in a near-by town.
For free of charge he'll shave off your hair
So that your head is completely bare.
Donald Borns heur was the tallest of us all.
Although his job has nothing to do with being tall.
A clothes designer from Gay Paree marks his fame.
"Calling all men- Hire him to design for your dame."
John Brokaw has headed for a rise.
We feel at his profession he is a prize.
He tells the people what they've missed.
Because he is a well known psychiatrist.
I'm anxious to tell you about Jim Chase.
Your' re now looking at a millionaire's face.
While in Texas he struck oil.
The lucky guy--he'll never have to toil.
Bernie's name has acquired fame.
The senile rate him high acclaim.
When you want rest, no more to roam.
Look up the sign "Cotter's Old Peoples' Horne."
Bev Foster was always our girl sports star.
In this world she's really gone far.
World's Champion Lady Wrestler is the title she now owns.
You'd better step aside, if you value your bones.
When you are hungry and want to dine,
Don't forget a friend of mine.
For Kenny Hopper you should look.
The Ranch House hires him as chief cook.
As I think back I remember Mary Jo,
Always full of pep and ready to go.
She is now manager of a Form Fit Factory,
And from what I hear, she is quite satisfactory.
Just wait till I tell you about Alice.
She married a Prince and lives in a palace.
She has money, furs, and jewels galore.
Could a woman ask for anything more?
Bud was the shy guy from our class.
I don't think he ever looked at a lass.
Well now he was seven k1ds to call him Daddy,
Besides being our lady President's golf caddy.
Chuck Markee was another on our list.
A day of school he never missed.
And to our school he never said good-bye,
Because he's now custodian of Tiskilwa High.
I now see a classmate called David Miller.
Take a ride with him if you want a thriller.
A stock car racer now is he,
Minus one toe plus a broken knee.
We'll now pay Betty Morris a call.
A performance is coming and she invited us all.
She yodels at the Barn Dance every Saturday night.
I heard her last week, and, Brother, she's all right.
Joy was a happy-go-lucky gal.
She was one with many a pal.
Marriage ~ounselling is her task.
If you've aproblem, thenjust ask.
Sheldon was a guy who had lots to say.
That's why he had the lead in our Senior Class Play.
As a busy Father, he leads quite a life,
Because you see, this Father is a "Housewife."
Judy Pearson was sometimes known as "Red."
I guess it's because she blushed, when anything was said.
One can describe her career as being "hot,"
Beca.use "Red, the Fire Eater" is the name she's got.
The name Diane rings a bell.
Remember her when you've something to sell.
Her voice rings out loud and clear,
For she's a lady auctioneer.
Ronald Rocke was a smart boy in school.
He always obeyed every single rule.
Well he's now Professor Rocke from the U. of I.
When the coeds see him they sigh, 11 0h My."
I ran into Don Sash just the other day.
When asked if he likes his job he says, "It's 0. K."
Formerly Don was our local dispatcher,
But now he is the town's only dog catcher.
Fond of music is Dee Ann.
She beats upon an old dish pan.
She has a seat in the band of many tones.
You know him well as Old Spike Jones.
Rosie Smith is a familiar name.
Don't you think the very same?
She's a deep sea diver off Florida's Coast.
Looking for gold and treasures most.
Janice Stalter was quiet and shy.
When we tell you her career you'll think it's a lie.
A comedian she is; a second Martha Raye.
She keeps them a laughing both night and day.
Dick Travis is the man to see;
That is, if you can pay the fee.
As interior decorator he's sublime;
Working at it all the time.
Ruth Vaughn has traveled far to find,
For years she's had it on her mind
To be the wife of a famous man
Her husband's the Ambassador of Pakistan.
Remember Johnny Wilson with all his wavy hair.
He has an occupation that is very, very rare.
Liberace and he play duets on T.V.
That, my friends, is something to see.
The last on our list is Dona Wright.
Her job has something to do with a beautiful sight.
A more peculiar position would be hard to seek.
For you see Dona is a chauffeur Driver up Pike's Peak.

This year fifty six members of the THS band were

under the direction of Miss Doris Travis.
The band participated in many acti vi ties along with
its annual music concerts. It marched at the Macomb
Homecoming; it gave many well-planned performances
with snappy marching and intrtcate formations at all
home football games. The marching band was led by
Bonnie Moses, drum majorette, and four twirlers:
Beth Reed, Shirley Mussche, An11a Mae Morris, and
Virginia Tyne.
The Band played at all home basketball game under
the title of "Pep Band." They also marched at the
Homecoming Parade and played for graduation.
This year we received a second rating at District

CHORUS
The three choruses, which are accredited classes with six
weeks and semester grades given, add much to the music life at
THS. The choruses--mixed, boys, and girls--were under the di-
rection of Miss Doris Travis. Judy Pearson and Jeann Miller acted
as accompanists.
Our g1rls chorus met every Monday and Wednesday of the week.
It was divided into two groups- -freshman and sophomore girls
meeting eighth hours, and upperclassmen meeting ninth hour.
Each Tuesday and Thursday the freshman and sophomore boys
meet eighth hour and the juniors and seniors meet ninth hours.
The mixed chorus meet first hour every Wednesday and alternate
periods once a week.
All choruses performed at the annual music concerts given at
the THS gymnasium, and participated in District Music Contest at
Earlville. The girls chorus proudly announces that they received
a first rating at the contest. An octet, quartet, and two soloists re-
ceived a first rating also.
The year will long be remembered as a successful one for the
chorus department of THS.
