Tutorial Microstrip Antenna

1. Design a microstrip patch antenna design with inset feed. The antenna will be designed
to work in 2.4GHz ISM band used in WiFi devices. Suppose you required to design
the patch antenna on a RT/Duroid 5870 substrate. The RT/Duroid substrate has a
dielectric constant of 2.33 and a thickness (or height) of 0.787mm. Let use a 50 Ω
microstrip feed. The patch antenna is illustrated as shown in Figure 1 below. Calculate
the value of all parameters as in Table 1.

Parameters Description
W Width of Patch
L Length of Patch
h Height (or thickness) of RT/Duroid 5870 Substrate
d Distance of inset fed

2. Design a rectangular microstrip antenna for Bluetooth application. The idealistic

lossless substrate (Rogers) has a dielectric constant of 9.0 and a height of 0.2 cm.
Determine the physical dimensions (width and length) of the patch antenna.

3. Design a rectangular microstrip antenna so that it will resonate at 4 GHz. The

idealistic lossless substrate (RT/Duroid 6010.2) has a dielectric constant of 10 and
a height of 0.150 cm.
Antenna & Propagation

(i) Determine the physical dimensions (width and length) of the patch antenna.
(ii) Draw the microstrip dimension of this rectangular patch.
(iii) What is the real input impedance? (Neglect coupling)
(iv) Find the location (from the leading radiating slot) of coaxial feed so that the
total input impedance is 150 Ω.
