M5 Lesson 3 -Media Industry and the Social World

The impact of Advertising

We learned in the previous courses that advertising is the lifeblood of the media. Without
advertising, the media cannot survive. Even media organizations run by the state are accepting
sponsorships to augment their operations.

There is nothing wrong with overflowing advertisements if that means the media can expand and
strengthen more its operations. The problem starts when even the editorial polices, and judgments are
affected by the demands of the advertisers. One good example is what happened to the labor strikes of
workers in Nestle company in Laguna.

Stories were not widely reported in big media companies because Nestle is one of their biggest
sponsors. Read the story here:

Another case is the labor strike of NutriAsia employees. Although the incident was covered, only
few did particularly those in the social media like Rappler.com. Large media networks seemed to show
disinterest to this story. The question is why? Read the story of strike
