What Campuses can and can’t do and Connection to current Events

The world is changing concerning lifestyle, and campuses comprise an entire category of what

the world consists of. In "What Campuses can and can't do," Chemerinsky and Gillman expound on the

various aspects that campuses can and cannot do through their speech on triggering warnings, creating

safe spaces, and the macroaggressions. According to Erwin and Howard, “ Faculty members may choose

to provide student’s warnings before presenting material that might be offensive or upsetting to them.”

(Chemerinsky and Gillman 546) Students are represented in the school faculties by the student's council,

who look after their affairs on campuses today. Warnings are no longer issued to the students before the

presentation of materials that might be offensive. Instead, the faculty and the student council discussions

on the productivity of the intended material and whether it should be presented to the students or not.

According to Chemerinsky and Gillman, “Campuses can create safe spaces for students to

express their free will…. Campuses cannot use the concepts of safe spaces to create expressions of ideas

considered too offensive..” (Chemerinsky and Gillman 548). On campuses today, students have the “

Freedom of speech." They are allowed to point out their views, elect their student leaders, and through

them, they can present their ideas. Colleges and universities have given students free spaces. However,

some faculties are using safe spaces to deliver materials that may be offensive to the students. Recently,

racism has been on the rise in campuses, thus creating the "Black Lives Matter Movement." For instance,

at the University of London, racism has been on the increase to up to 79%, and yet they have no idea of

who to present their grievances (Murugesu).

Campuses through disciplinary faculties can sensitize on the impacts of certain words. For

instance, Lake Superior State University in 2020 made a list of 45 words that were banished due to the

high rate of misuse, overuse, and general uselessness (Jaschik). This action was taken to prevent

macroaggressions of different words.
